BERLIN -- Berlin Brothersvalley walked off Northern Bedford in overtime, 30-29, Friday night at Center Rock Inc. Sports Complex.
The game came down to one final play and Berlin took the gamble to go for a two-point conversion.
"I asked my guys and they said, coach, let's go for it," Berlin coach Dante Paul stated. "I told the coaches in the headset, we win a ballgame, we lose a ballgame, it's not the end of the world. If my guys are feeling confident, let's go for it."
Carter Durst, who scored the touchdown the play before, took the snap, broke a tackle, and lunged ahead for the conversion sending the Mountaineers to 5-0. The Panthers, on the other hand, weren't so convinced about that ruling.
"I'll have to watch the film, but I also 100 percent think, I'm not trying to skew the game, it was a great football game, but I thought his knee was down," NBC coach Garry Black said. "We didn't get the call there and I'm going to take this as a 29-28 win for Northern Bedford. Refs are humans too, it happens."
The Panthers jumped out to an early lead in the first on a touchdown from Erik Swanseen. Berlin responded after with a touchdown pass from Brady Janidlo to Ryan Janidlo.
Northern Bedford took a lead to halftime following a 15-yard scoring pass from Trace Baker to Preston Horsh.
The Panthers came out of the half with some momentum, blocking a punt, which was nearly a touchdown return, but was later ruled down, giving Berlin a chance to stop them. They did just that, blocking a field goal.
Berlin tied it up shortly after on another Brady Janidlo touchdown pass. Northern Bedford put together a long drive afterwards and at the goal line, Baker attempted to sneak in for a score, got pushed back, and somehow pitched it to Brett Cottle for the go-ahead score.
After a big trick play, Berlin marched down the field to tie on Janidlo's third score of the night. That sent the game to overtime at 22-all where Berlin came out on top.
Play of the game: Aside from Durst's big runs at the end, Janidlo pulled off a trick play on second and a mile, throwing a pass to Ryan Janidlo for a 44-yard gain, setting up that tie to go to overtime.
Black on NBC offense: "Team's don't do that to Berlin and we're going to go home and there's going to be a loss in the win column. It's a loss forever, but we played like winners tonight. I thought we were outstanding."
Durst: "We believed in ourselves. We said we want the ball and we were going to run it down their throat and make it into that end zone because we wanted it bad enough."
Unsung Hero: Brady Janidlo threw for 153 yards and three touchdowns, while also having a big interception on defense.
Records: Northern Bedford (2-3), Berlin Brothersvalley (5-0).
