Traffic delays possible in Somerset, Cambria for road treatment

Delays will be possible beginning Monday, Aug. 11, for High Friction Surface Treatment work in Somerset and Cambria counties.
On Monday, RAM Construction Services of Michigan Inc., Linovia, Michigan, will set up long-term traffic control on Route 56 in Somerset County then start shot-blasting sections of the existing concrete road surface and placing HFST to these prepared areas.
Starting the following week, crews will move to Route 22 in Cambria County to complete the same type of work during overnight hours. All of the work during these two weeks is weather dependent and expected to be completed by Aug. 22.
This $2.7 million project began in July to place HFST on several state routes in five of District 9's six counties.
Locations for the project are as follows:
Bedford County, Route 36; Cambria County, Route 22; Fulton County, routes 30, 522 and 915; Huntingdon County, routes 350, 655, 747 and 829; Somerset County, Route 56.
The contractor will move around these locations during the course of this project and the starting locations are subject to change, as all work is weather dependent. All work is expected to be completed by the end of September 2025.
HFST typically applied to roadways, including horizontal curves, intersections, and steep grades, to improve grip. The project also includes centerline rumble strips and pavement markings.
I-70 center to open
PennDOT reported that the rest area on the westbound side of Interstate 70 in Warfordsburg, Fulton County, will reopen on Monday, Aug. 18.
The welcome center has been closed since July 21 for the installation of a new water treatment system.
Superloads moving through area
Superloads will continue to move through Bedford, Blair, Cambria and Somerset counties the week of Aug. 11-14, according to PennDOT.
These loads of wind turbine blades, tower and turbine parts have the potential to slow traffic and cause delays.
Top tower sections and center upper mid tower loads will move at 7 a.m. Monday on Route 220 in Bedford County, followed by mid tower sections at 8 a.m.
The sections will move on Route 220 and I-99, and Route 2024 (Sproul Mountain Road), through Bedford County, I-99, and Route 22 through Blair County, and Route 22, Route 1003 (Munster Road), Route 22, Route 1036 (Rowena Drive), Route 22 (Admiral Peary Highway), Route 219, Route 4031 (Plank Road), Route 219, Route 4013 (Sunset Road), and Route 36 through Cambria County.
Windmill blade loads will use Route 219 in Somerset County beginning at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
The loads will travel on Route 219 through Somerset County, Route 4031 (Plank Road), Route 219 and Route 4013 (Sunset Road), and Route 36 in Cambria County.
On Tuesday, hub assembly loads will use Route 220 in Bedford County beginning at 7 a.m., followed by Nacelle and drive train loads at 8 a.m. These loads will follow the same route as the tower loads.
More mid tower sections along with base tower sections will begin in Bedford County at 7 a.m. Wednesday. Center lower mid tower sections will begin moving at 8 a.m., also beginning in Bedford County.
Additional top tower, mid tower and center upper mid tower sections will begin at 7 and 8 a.m. Thursday, following the same tower route through Bedford and Cambria counties.
Windmill blades will move at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday, beginning in Somerset and following the same route as the Monday delivery.
Additional hub assemblies will move through the area beginning at 7 a.m. on Friday, followed at 9 a.m. by Nacelle loads, all originating in Bedford County and following the tower load route.
Also Friday, a drivetrain load will begin in Bedford County at 8 a.m. and follow the tower route.
All of the superloads are destined for the CPV Rogue's Wind facility near Patton, Cambria County.
Drivers should remain alert for these slow-moving, two-lane operations and use alternate routes when possible. Traveling both the posted speed limit and slower as needed, superloads will occasionally pull over to allow traffic to pass.
