Mosquito control efforts planned

Spraying to take place in Antis Township, near Legion Park

The Blair County Mosquito-borne Disease Control Program will be conducting a truck-mounted ultra-low volume mosquito control operation in the Parkview Estates area of Antis Township and the Legion Park area of Hollidaysburg Borough to reduce populations of nuisance mosquitoes and mosquitoes capable of transmitting West Nile Virus.

The work will begin about dusk today, Wednesday, Aug. 19. Signs will be posted on the day of the control event to inform residents.

Areas include but are not limited to: Northern Blair County Recreation Center, Parkview Estates, Legion Park and Hollidaysburg Borough.

High populations of nuisance mosquitoes have been found in these areas. Other areas within close proximity may also be treated.

Weather conditions and other unexpected events could delay or cancel the spray operations. If these operations are canceled, they will be rescheduled for Friday, Aug. 21.

Residents are asked to stay indoors while the truck-mounted spray is conducted in their neighborhoods. Blair County staff have a policy of turning off the sprayer as a courtesy when residents are outside during a spray. The more often the spray is turned off, the less effective the operation will be at reducing mosquitoes and West Nile Virus in a given neighborhood.

The product being used for this operation is Biomist 3+15 ULV at a rate of 0.75 oz./acre.
