FNB donates $4,500 to college foundation
JOHNSTOWN -- First National Bank's Senior Vice President and Regional Credit Officer, Greg Winger, recently presented a $4,500 donation to the Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Foundation.
This contribution will be directed toward the college's Educational Income Tax Credit (EITC) fund, further supporting its mission and initiatives.
This donation will empower the bank and other institutions to contribute to the educational initiatives offered by the college. By maintaining its EITC status and with the support of this exceptional contribution, Penn Highlands will be able to provide classes at a reduced price for students in the Accelerated College Education (ACE) Program and those enrolled in dual enrollment.
EITC supports high school students by offering the opportunity to enroll in college-level courses. Through this program, students can earn credits and gain insight into the potential futures that Penn Highlands can provide them with.
In 2023, the EITC Program received $17,000 in funds, enabling the college to provide discounted rates on more than 7,000 credits to more than 2,000 students who participated in the past year.
Mock trial advances to opening round
HUNTINGDON -- For the sixth consecutive year, and every year that the team has been in existence, Juniata College will advance to the Opening Round of the Mock Trial National Championship Series.
This marks the second consecutive year that Juniata will send both of its teams, A and B, to Nationals.
Coach David Andrews '74 noted, "The fact that both of our teams have advanced to the Nationals for the second consecutive year speaks to the strength of our overall program for Mock Trial."
Both teams competed in the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) Regional Tournament at Penn State University, with Dan Cummins '24, Bryce Garland '27, and Shea Langille '25, winning All-Region Attorney awards and Rich Wei '26 winning an All-Region Witness award.
Six teams of the 22 competing at the regional competition progressed to the National Championship's Opening Round. Joining Juniata College's A and B teams are the two teams from Georgetown University, Dickinson College A and University of Rochester A.
This year's Opening Round of the National Championship playoffs will be hosted by Xavier University and the University of Cincinnati, held at the University of Cincinnati March 15-17.
More than 700 teams entered the National Tournament at the start, with playoff competitions taking place throughout the U.S.
Following the Opening Round, the remaining 48 teams will face off at the National Championships in Chicago April 19-21.
Altoona student-athlete recognized for academics
ANNVILLE -- Darrian Berkheimer of Altoona was one of more than 140 Lebanon Valley College student-athletes to be named to the Middle Atlantic Conference's (MAC) Fall Academic Honor Roll.
Berkheimer, a graduate of Altoona Area High School, is a member of the Lebanon Valley College women's soccer team and is pursuing a bachelor of science in exercise science at The Valley.
The academic honor roll is comprised of student-athletes who compete in a varsity-level sport and register a term/semester GPA of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) or higher.
The MAC honored nearly 1,700 total student-athletes across all of the conference's institutions who competed in men's and women's cross country, field hockey, football, men's and women's soccer and women's volleyball.
The Flying Dutchmen had the second-highest number of honorees in the conference.
Commonwealth students return to Jamaica
A team of Commonwealth University students recently returned to the small community of Harmons, Jamaica, along with faculty members.
The 18 undergraduate and five physician assistant graduate students represented the Lock Haven, Bloomsburg and Clearfield campuses.
Among the students who traveled to Harmons were Alexis Mayes of Coalport, Caroline Nagle of Altoona, Abigail Sutton of DuBois and Loren Way of DuBois.
Foundation donates $3,500 for uniforms
JOHNSTOWN -- Black Bear Athletics at Pennsylvania Highlands received a $3,500 donation from the Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Foundation.
This contribution helped fund the purchase of new uniforms for their respective volleyball and basketball seasons.
Both athletic programs added a set of home and away jerseys. The volleyball team will wear either black or green jerseys for home and away games. The basketball team will sport a white jersey at home and black for on the road.
Foundation creates Basic Hygiene Project
JOHNSTOWN -- The Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Foundation has developed The Basic Hygiene Project, an initiative that will supply Pennsylvania Highlands Community College students with full-size hygiene products, including toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and other items.
Former students Renu Williams and Laura McNutt conceptualized the idea. They delivered a presentation to administrators, advocating for the importance of hygiene products and highlighting their potential impact on students at the institution.
The project will be housed in the KEYS Office, alongside the Black Bear Food Share Program, and in the Student Activities Office at the college's Richland Campus. All locations will also have a cart with hygiene items for students to take as needed.
"This falls under a similar mission as the Black Bear Food Share Program," said Carole VanMeter, director of the foundation. "We're giving students all of the essential items they need to take care of themselves."
The foundation has already begun acquiring supplies. Inquiries have also been sent to local dentists and doctors to make donations to the program.
Creation of the project was made possible through funding received via the PA Hunger-Free Grant.
