The Bureau of the Census, Philadelphia office, announced that Blair County would be part of a nationwide survey on employment and unemployment the following week for the U.S. Dept. of Labor when it announced the monthly national employment rate. Mary J. Weidley of Tyrone was to be the local interviewer.
25 years ago: Jan. 9, 1999
Officials at Canoe Creek State Park were drawing down the water seven inches in an effort to kill an invasive weed called the Eurasian Milfoil that clogged boat motors, interfered with swimming and depleted aquatic oxygen, which could kill fish. A ban on ice fishing had to be imposed.

Altoona City Council applied for a $500,000 grant to repair damage to sidewalks and curbs along Broad Avenue caused when a PennDOT subcontractor over-trimmed trees along Broad from 24th to 31st streets. Total repair cost was to be $1.2 million.
