Prince Gallitzin burning fields

Local residents and passersby are being cautioned to watch for controlled burns at Prince Gallitzin State Park this spring.

The prescribed burn fields, totaling about 50 acres, are located along Marina Road. The burns will enhance the warm season grass field habitat for wildlife, control the growth of competing vegetation species, control tick populations and encourage native regeneration, the park said in a news release.

The prescribed burn will take place in the near future, pending suitable weather conditions to ensure that the fire and smoke can be controlled properly throughout the burn and that the ecological goals are met.

During the burn, sections of Range and Gibbons Roads will be temporarily closed until smoke is clear in these areas and vehicles can safely access this area of the park.

Local residents may see water tanker trucks, UTVs, fire, smoke and other activities around the park the day of the prescribed burn.

Starting at /week.
