Altoona grad Bob Johnston going into IUP HOF

INDIANA — Altoona native Bob Johnston will be inducted into the IUP Athletics Hall of Fame.

Johnston led IUP to the NAIA District 18 baseball championship twice along with three playoff appearances.

Pitching for the Crimson Hawks from 1965-68, Johnston ranks fifth in career strikeouts with 200, sixth in career victories with 17 and 12th in career innings pitched with 172.1.

His earned-run average of 1.41 is the second-best in school history prior to 1974.

Johnston, a 1964 Altoona Area High School graduate, signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Pirates and pitched three years (1968-70) in the Bucs’ organization.

His record was 12-1 in 45 appearances, mainly as a reliever, and his best year came with Class A Gastonia when he posted a 10-1 record.

IUP’s Hall of Fame class will be its 30th, and Johnston and his fellow inductees will be honored prior to the Eagles’ football game against Lock Haven on Saturday, Sept. 13.
