Senate panel eyes TikTok ban
Move would prohibit use on state devices

TikTok would be banned from use on state government devices or networks under legislation set for a committee vote Tuesday in the Senate.
The move comes in response to concerns that TikTok poses a security threat due to FBI warnings that the social media network could be used by the Chinese government to collect data on U.S. citizens.
At least 39 states have passed laws banning the use of TikTok on state government devices. A federal ban was approved by Congress, but President Donald Trump has postponed implementation of that legislation, pending a potential sale of TikTok.
The proposed sale of TikTok was further complicated by Chinese objections to Trump’s tariff plans. Earlier this month, Trump extended the deadline for TikTok to be sold another 75 days.
“This ban will likely be challenged and could take years for resolution. In the meantime, it is still imperative that we protect our own government devices from any potential threat,” Sen. Kristin Phillips-Hill, R-York, said in a cosponsor memo for Senate Bill 376.
