President dies of battle wounds

N’DJAMENA — Chad’s president of three decades died of wounds suffered during a visit to front-line troops battling a shadowy rebel group, the military announced Tuesday, as the insurgents vowed to take the capital in what could become a violent battle for control of the oil-rich Central African nation.

The military quickly named President Idriss Deby Itno’s son, as the country’s interim leader. Deby was 68.

Celebrities urge US not to sign deal

RIO DE JANEIRO — Dozens of celebrities including actors Leonardo DiCaprio, Jane Fonda and Joaquin Phoenix on Tuesday called on U.S. President Joe Biden to refrain from signing any environmental agreement with his Brazilian counterpart, Jair Bolsonaro.

The open letter signed by the artists comes just days Bolsonaro joined dozens of other foreign leaders at a U.S.-led summit to tackle the climate crisis, which will be held online. Bolsonaro’s environment minister has been outspoken about his desire for U.S. financial support for Amazon preservation.

65 arrested for trafficking cannabis

BARCELONA — Police in Spain said Tuesday they have dismantled one of the largest criminal gangs growing cannabis in the country and trafficking it across Europe.

At least 65 people, most of them Chinese nationals, were arrested in several Spanish cities, Portugal and the Netherlands.
