Woman dead after van crash

BUFFALO — A woman was killed in a Thanksgiving Day crash after a speeding minivan plowed into the McKinley Monument in downtown Buffalo, police said.

The unidentified male driver was in critical condition after the crash, which happened before 7:30 a.m. Thursday. The female passenger, whose name also was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police kill man in trailer park shootout

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police have shot and killed a man who fired on officers and set his trailer on fire, the city’s police chief said.

A SWAT team and other officers were sent to a trailer park on the Texas city’s northeast side around 9 p.m. Wednesday after people reported a man firing a gun inside his trailer, Chief William McManus told the San Antonio Express-News.

Stowaway owl returns to the wild

SAUGERTIES — Rocky the stowaway owl is back in the wild.

The tiny Saw-whet owl was named Rockefeller after it was found by a worker setting up the holiday tree Nov. 16 at Manhattan’s Rockefeller Center. The owl was apparently trapped in the 75-foot-tall Norway spruce when it was cut down 170 miles north, in upstate New York on Nov. 12.
