Butcher quits dog meat trade

CHI MEAKH — Animal rights activists in Cambodia have gained a small victory in their effort to end the trade in dog meat, convincing a canine slaughterhouse in one village to abandon the business.

Buth Pith and his wife Khath Hach this week shut down the small abattoir they had operated for about seven years after animal protection groups agreed to provide them an alternate living by building a small convenience store for them.


Kids banned from buying junk food

MEXICO CITY — Legislators in southern Mexico have approved a ban on selling high-calorie snack food to children, seeking to combat one of the world’s highest rates of childhood obesity.

A first of its kind in Mexico, the measure approved Wednesday by the Oaxaca state legislature would fine shopkeepers for selling or giving away high-calorie snack food like sodas, pastries or chips to anyone under 18, unless an accompanying parent or guardian authorized it.

South Korea

Rainfall causes deadly boat capsizing

One person died and five others are missing after their boats capsized in floodwaters in South Korea on Thursday following incessant torrential rains, officials said.

One of the boats was stuck in a wire near a dam in Chuncheon, just northeast of Seoul. Two other boats rushed to help but all three were overturned.
