Woman, pets killed in house fire
A fast-moving fire that roared through a Pittsburgh home killed a woman and her dog and cat, authorities said.
The fire in the city’s Brookline neighborhood was reported shortly before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Emergency responders encountered heavy smoke and flames, but firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze and enter the residence. They soon found the woman dead on the first floor.
Mother to be tried in children’s deaths
A mother has been ordered to stand trial on murder charges in the deaths of two young children found hanging in an eastern Pennsylvania basement last fall.
A Berks County district judge made the ruling Wednesday after hearing almost four hours of testimony in the case of 37-year-old Lisa Snyder. She’s charged with first- and third-degree murder, child endangerment and evidence-tampering in the September deaths of Brinley, 4, and Conner, 8.
Assistant District Attorney Margaret McCallum said Snyder was the only adult in the house when the children were found hanging in the basement of the Albany Township house. They died three days later.
Snyder has maintained that the children killed themselves.
