Military plane with 38 missing
SANTIAGO — Chile’s air force said it lost radio contact with a transport plane carrying 38 people on a flight Monday evening to the country’s base in Antarctica.
It said the military had declared an alert and activated a search and rescue team.
The C-130 Hercules carried 17 crew members and 21 passengers. The personnel were to check on a floating fuel supply line and other equipment at the Chilean base.
Hong Kong police defuse bombs
HONG KONG — Hong Kong police said they defused two large homemade bombs packed with nails and designed “to kill and to maim people” in the latest reported seizure of weaponry during six months of anti-government protests that have shaken the city.
Police said the bombs found Monday evening inside a school on Hong Kong Island were “complete, fully functional and ready to be used.”
The origin of the bombs was not clear.
VW charged with faking emissions tests
OTTAWA — The Canadian government said Monday that it is charging Volkswagen for importing cars into Canada that company executives knew violated emissions standards.
The German automaker faces 58 charges of violating the Canadian Environmental Protection Act for bringing 128,000 cars into Canada with illegal emissions between 2008-15. The company faces two other charges of providing misleading information.
