Rights group: 63 dead, 15 missing in protests

MANAGUA — A non-governmental rights group in Nicaragua said it has confirmed that 63 people died during protests over social security changes that convulsed the country last week.

The Permanent Commission on Human Rights adds that at least 15 other people are missing. Director Marcos Carmona accused authorities Thursday of “a massacre” against student protesters.

Russia offers ‘witnesses’ to disprove attack

THE HAGUE — Russia ratcheted up its efforts Thursday to try to disprove that a Syrian town was hit by a poison gas attack, bringing a group of Syrians, including an 11-year-old boy, to the global chemical weapons watchdog’s headquarters to denounce the reports as fake. The U.S., Britain and France boycotted the event.
