Altoona Igloo event officially ushers in track & field season

High school track and field

Altoona sophomore Mekhi Jackson finished with a long jump of 20'-1 3/4".

On a sunny but very chilly afternoon that featured the type of blustery weather for which the season-opening Altoona Igloo Track and Field Invitational was so aptly named a half-century ago, many area athletes adjusted to the less-than-ideal conditions to turn in stellar performances Saturday at Mansion Park Stadium.

Bellwood-Antis sophomore Ella Cherry led the local contingent with two individual victories, winning the girls triple jump with an effort of 38 feet, three and a quarter inches, and the long jump with a leap of 17-3¼, but several others shined as well.

Altoona junior Hannah Owulede took first place in the girls 100 hurdles with a time of 15.56, while her AAHS teammates Kihlee Noel and Annalyse Yost won the shot put and javelin, respectively. Noel’s winning shot put throw was 37 feet, and Yost captured first place in the javelin with a toss of 133 feet.

Central senior Lanee Berkhimer won the girls 3200 run in a time of 11:43.77, Hollidaysburg freshman Sydney Ulery won the 400 dash in 1:01.41, and Penn Cambria sophomore Kate Eckenrode won the 100-meter dash in 12:57.

The Altoona girls 400-meter relay team of junior Jill Long, seniors Sophia O’Dea and Brooke Weaver, and junior Bailey Baron took first place in that event with a time of 49.56.

Penn Cambria's Kate Eckenrode edges out Hollidaysburg's Jaclyn Sahlaney and Altoona's Sophia O'Dea at the line in the Girls 100 dash final.

In boys competition, Hollidaysburg junior Reuben Manfred turned in a first-place time of 9:49.86, and two of Altoona’s relay teams took first place in their events. Altoona’s 400-meter relay team of sophomores Dom Vertilecci and Mikai Jackson, and seniors Nathan Lutz and Colin Etters, joined forces to win that event in a time of 44.28, while the Mountain Lions’ 3200-meter relay squad of junior Xander Frederick, junior Archie Glover, sophomore Ben McKee and junior Seth Lieb won their race with a time of 8:43.01.

Bellwood’s Cherry captured first place in both her jumping events Saturday after capturing the gold medal in the triple jump at last spring’s District 6 Class 2A meet.

“Honestly, I was just trying to do my best, and to stay consistent today,” Cherry said. “The cold weather made things more difficult, but I just tried to stay warm as best as I could. This was a good way for me to start the season.”

Bellwood-Antis girls coach Jennifer Soisson said that the present is very bright for Cherry, and the future should be even brighter.

“We knew that Ella was only scratching the surface of her potential last year as a freshman,” Soisson said of Cherry. “This year, she’s been able to focus on fine-tuning her phases and technique. She is also an accomplished gymnast, and she is experienced with precision and explosiveness.

“Ella was the 2025 District 6 Class 2A champion in the triple jump, and she placed third in the long jump,” Soisson added. “Ella is a true competitor who will be working toward that direction again in 2026.”

Owulede thought that she was helped by her strong indoor track season this past winter.

“The indoor season really helped me a lot,” Owulede said. “During the whole indoor season, I was just trying to prove myself, that I can do it, and my progression has been really good.

“I had a feeling today that I could have a chance to come out on top,” Owulede said. “I just wanted to finish with a good time.”

While Owulede said that she is still in the process of proving herself, two Altoona seniors who competed in the PIAA Class 3A state track and meet last May at Shippensburg University, Noel and Yost, already have put up impressive credentials.

Noel placed sixth in the state in the PIAA girls Class 3A shot put last year as a junior, and she also qualified for the state meet in the discus event. Noel took first place in the shot put on Saturday, and finished second in the discus event behind State College’s Alyssa Lipski.

“I’d like to set the school record in both events this season,” Noel said. “I set it in the discus during a meet earlier this season, and now I need to do it in the shot, even though my throw today in the shot was my PR (personal record).

“I felt a little bit tighter today because of the weather, but I tried not to think about that, because the weather affected everybody here today,” Noel added.

Yost, who will continue her javelin throwing career on the NCAA Division I level at the University of Michigan next year, qualified for the PIAA state meet in that event as a junior last year and came very close to leaving with a top-eight placewinner’s medal, finishing ninth.

Winning a state medal will definitely be on her to-do list later this spring, and she got her season off to a good start by placing first in the javelin at the Igloo.

“My goal was to start off the season with a throw of at least 130 feet, and I’m really proud of myself,” Yost said. “I had a good outing despite the weather. My biggest goal today was to stay consistent.”

Central’s Berkhimer has been an accomplished distance runner for a long time, and placed fourth in the Class 2A girls state cross country meet last fall. She won the 3200 run in the Igloo, finishing over seven seconds ahead of runner-up Julie Madison of Southern Fulton.

“It was pretty cold and windy today, but I’ve been running outside all through the winter months, and you’ve just got to brave the weather,” Berkhimer said. “Today wasn’t my fastest time, but it was all right. I started the first third of the race strong and finished the last third strong, then just got into a steady flow during the middle of the race.”

Saturday marked the first-ever appearance at the Igloo meet for Penn Cambria’s Eckenrode, and she made it a memorable one, winning the girls 100 dash.

“I feel very good about it, especially in this weather,” Eckenrode said. “I think that participating in indoor track this winter helped me to get to this level. Last year, I was competing in a volleyball tournament and couldn’t participate in this meet. I’m glad that I got to make it here this year and win.”

Hollidaysburg freshman Ulery overcame her share of adversity to win the girls 400 dash.

“I’ve had some setbacks with injuries the last couple of weeks, but I felt really good today,” Ulery said. “It was a little cold, but everybody faced the same weather conditions, and you can’t let that become a factor. The good competition that I faced here pushed me.”

Manfred, who won the boys 3200 run, joined Ulery as an individual Igloo champion for Hollidaysburg.

“You never know what to expect at the Igloo but the competition I faced today led me to a solid effort and a new PR time,” Manfred said. “Once the race started, I didn’t notice the weather – the key for this season so far is accomplishing what you can despite the conditions.”
