Local schools prep for D6 swim tourney
The District 6 Class 3A and 2A postseason is here for area high school swimmers, beginning today and continuing on Saturday for schools in the Mirror coverage area.
The tournament for teams from Altoona, Cambria Heights, Central Cambria, Hollidaysburg and Tyrone will be at the Penn State Natatorium both days.
On the line is a trip to Bucknell University for the state tournament slated for March 12-15.
The following is a list of competitors who qualified for this weekend’s event. It includes:
Hollidaysburg (3A)
– Hollidaysburg has returning state qualifiers in Kara Neeley, Kiri Dougherty, Addison Smith, Jacqueline Bevan and Kaden Henderson.
Also joining them are Margaret Bandstra, Madalyn Brick, Adalai Carney, Lily Davis, Hannah Donlan, Kiri Dougherty, Maya Grinberg, Bailey Henry, Draven Peters, Charlie Pollock, Kaleb Swalga, Johnny Vu and Eli Weaver.
“We preach practice, persistence, teamwork, snake horse,” Hollidaysburg coach Baron Leonard said.
Altoona (3A)
– Competing for the Mountain Lion girls team are Vida Blanco-Peterman (seeded 3rd on 200 free relay), Abigail Chverko (seeded 3rd in 200 free relay), Addison Fox (seeded 2nd in 400 free relay, 200 free relay), Ella Heverly (seeded 2nd in 400 free relay, seeded 3rd in 200 medley relay), Lana Luke (seeded 2nd in 400 free relay, seeded 3rd in 200 medley relay), Addison Mitchell (seeded 3rd in 200 medley relay), Graycie Price (seeded 2nd in 400 free relay, seeded 3rd in 200 medley relay), Sofia Hallinan (seeded 3rd in 200 free relay) and Lucy Weyandt.
Competing for the boys team are Seth Beere, Gabriel Fleming, Seth Lieb, Alexander Pfahler, Zachary Tremmel, Chase Van Egdom and Gregory Wenzel.
“The coaching staff and I are excited to see what this year’s district team can do,” Altoona coach Brian Kephart said. “We are looking for fast times and high places. Hopefully, we can bring home some medals and lots of ribbons.”
Cambria Heights (2A)
– There are 10 Highlanders heading to Penn State. For the boys, there is Vinny Ricupero, Rocco Ricupero and Jackson Rice. For the girls, there’s Sophia Cann, Abby Terza, Mackenzie Henry, Amanda Smeltzer, Alixandra Baker, Grace Gregg and Megan Eckenrode. The girls are also competing in the 200 medley and free relay, along with the 400 free relay.
“”We have strong swimmers and they have improved all season,” Heights coach Lois Smith said. “We are expecting many PR’s and great performances. We are a young team with high expectations for the future.”
Tyrone (2A)
– Competing for the Tyrone boys team are Lucas Bonsell, Owen Dunklebarger, Dylan and Matthew Eckenrode, Cameron Gallagher, Chase Gallagher, Eric Goodman, Vinnie Maloney, Cameron Nelson, Ned Smearman and Patrick Van Kleunen. They also have three boys relays teams competing, the 200 medley relay, 200 free and 400 free.
For the girls, the Lady Eagles have Blake Pennington, Adalyn Jeffries, Grace Corl and Emma Bonsell competing. There are two relays competing, the 200 medley and 200 free.
