Denis tied for fifth place after first day at states for Golf

STATE COLLEGE — Hollidaysburg junior Crosby Denis is tied for fifth in a 36-player field after carding a 75 on the first day of the PIAA Class 3A girls golf championships at the Penn State Blue Course on Monday.

Denis made bogey on her first two holes and made five to just one birdie on her front nine, but she rebounded with three birdies and just one bogey on the back nine to finish at 3-over par.

Denis is trailing Elizabeth Forward’s Mya Morgan, the first-day leader, by six strokes.

Morgan shot a 3-under par 69. Three golfers are tied for second, one stroke better than Denis at 74.

On the boys side in Class 3A, Daniel Boone’s Chase Yenser leads the field at 4-under par 68.

In Class 2A girls, defending PIAA Class 2A champion Madison Koshko of Saint Joseph’s is tied for the lead after shooting a 4-under par 68 with West Middlesex’s Kate Sowers and Shady Side Academy’s Alyssa Zhang. Olivia Koshko, Madison’s sister, is fourth after shooting a 75.

Bishop Carroll Catholic’s Sarah Miller is 28th after shooting 91.

Cole Powell of Scranton Prep leads the Class 2A boys field after shooting 68.

District 5 golfers Gavin Kolander of Bedford (tied for 11th with a 75) and Everett’s Jackson Dinnocente (tied for 22nd with a 77) are in the top 25.

Central Cambria’s Andrew Kasecky is tied for 33rd after a 79, Central’s Cody Clapper is tied for 41st with an 80 and Bishop Guilfoyle Academy’s Carter Boland is tied for 58th after carding an 85.

The individual portion of the PIAA golf championships wrap up today. The team championships, which will feature Bishop Guilfoyle Academy in 2A boys and Hollidaysburg in 3A girls, will be held on Wednesday.
