CURWENSVILLE — Glendale sophomore Logan Skebeck made his third straight start at quarterback on a rainy Friday night at Curwensville’s Coach Andy Evanko Stadium.
It was a memorable one for Skebeck, who threw for four touchdown passes, including a pretty 53-yard bomb to Connor Potutschnig at the end of the first half, and ran for another to lead the Vikings to a 30-8 win.
Skebeck, who backed up Troy Misiura the first six games, ended up completing 13 of his 17 passes for 164 yards and ran for 34 yards on 13 carries.
“Logan is a natural quarterback,” Glendale coach Dave “Spank” Trexler said. “We know he’s going to be something special in the next couple years. To get this opportunity and take advantage of it, it’s a testament to the effort and the work he puts in.
“We had coach (Tim) Janocko come down and work with our passing, and we could slowly see him progress. It’s tough to jump on a field as a sophomore and do things. We had some injuries and he just started fitting in correctly. We’re trying to win games. These kids will do whatever they’re asked.”
The Vikings improved to 3-6, while the Golden Tide fell to 1-8.
Play of the game: With time running out in the first half, Skebeck heaved a 53-yard touchdown pass to Potutschnig with 1:06 left, making the score 24-0.
“I just saw Potutschnig going deep and my line did an amazing job blocking for me,” Skebeck said. “I saw him down there and I launched it.”
“As things are slowing down for him, he’s really showing what he can do,” Trexler said. “He has the ability to get the ball down the field in different spots. He’s only going to get better as he gets more reps.”
Player of the game: In addition to his 53-yard TD pass, Skebeck also had TD passes of 21, 17 and 4 yards. He also scored on a 3-yard run and intercepted a pass.
Unsung heroes: The Glendale defense gave up only 178 total yards to Curwensville, and had one interception and a fumble recovery.
The defense did a great job,” Trexler said. “This team (Curwensville) has a lot of athletes, and they’re very well coached. You don’t stop then. You try and slow them down. I think the weather helped a little to our advantage, but we both played in it. Our defensive coaches did a great job game-planning, and the kids responded and made plays.”
Curwensville coach Jim Thompson on Skebeck: “He threw the ball well in the rain. He handled the conditions really well.”
Notable: Joey Kitko caught two of Skebeck’s TD passes — 21 yards and 4 yards. … Potutschnig caught two passes for 59 yards. … Curwensville running back Sammy Gustafson ran for 82 yards on 13 carries. … Misiura recovered a fumble.
Records: Glendale (3-6); Curwensville (1-8).
Next week: Glendale hosts Northern Bedford. Curwensville visits Tussey Mountain.
