Everett’s O-line too much for C-K

From Mirror reports

CLAYSBURG — Claysburg-Kimmel entered Friday night needing a win over Everett and help from other teams to earn a playoff game.

Like they have the entire season, the Bulldogs gave everything they had to make sure they did their part.

Unfortunately, for Claysburg the Warriors’ size in the trenches proved to be too much to overcome as C-K saw its season comes to a close with a 37-14 loss in Inter-County Conference non-divisional action on senior night at Bulldog Stadium.

“We talked to the kids and eventually physics does play out sometimes,” Claysburg-Kimmel coach Chuck Kassick said. “If you look up front, they (Everett) were way bigger than we were — way bigger. I mean, our kids played with as much heart and guts as you could possibly play — they didn’t quit, they didn’t give up. But eventually their size won out. They did a good job up front — they pushed us around and they had their way with us up front.”

Sequence of the game: Trailing 20-14 at the half, Claysburg-Kimmel received the second half kickoff and saw its drive stall out with a turnover on downs after a fourth-and 10 incomplete pass at the Everett 49.

On first down, Jakobe Harman burst open for a 32-yard run before three straight runs by Gaven Brown of 9, 8 and a 2-yarder which the senior crossed the goal line to swing momentum completely in favor of Everett with a 27-14 edge at 7:33 of the third.

Everett coach Brian Koontz: “That was a big thing. We made a few little tweaks at halftime. We came out and ran the first play with Jakobe who ran it down there pretty far. I think that was the turning point of the game. We just knew we needed one more. We needed one more score to get up on them (Claysburg-Kimmel) to force them out of a little bit of their comfort zone.”

Player of the game: Harman carried the ball 24 times for 149 yards and two touchdowns. The sophomore took the opening kickoff 80-yards for a score just 11 seconds into the contest to give Everett the early 7-0 lead. After Claysburg scored to tie the game at 14-14, the Warriors put together a 15-play, over seven minute drive that Harman capped off with a 10-yard TD run with 3:26 left in the first half to put Everett up for good at 20-14.

Unsung hero: Everett quarterback Jonathan Cooper didn’t need to do a lot of passing but when he did the sophomore’s completions were timely and on-point as he finished 6-of-7 for 96 yards. He also ran the ball 10 times for 58 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown run with 36 ticks remaining in the opening stanza that made the score 14-6.

Kassick: “Their running game did a great job. Number five (Harman) really ran hard too. Their quarterback, he didn’t throw a lot, but he made the right throws and the right decisions.”

Most vital statistic: In the second half, Claysburg-Kimmel got a first down on the second play of the half. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs didn’t get another first until there was just under four minutes left in the contest when Mark Lattieri ran for 10-yards on the opening play of C-K’s last drive of the night.

Koontz: “We did some good things tonight. We overcame some penalties and some mistakes. But we played pretty well. We battled, we ran the ball well and Johnny played smart at quarterback.”

Notable: Tyler Mowry got the Bulldogs on the board at 3:08 of the first quarter on a 9-yard run to make the score 7-6. … C-K’s other score came on a fake punt from their own 42 on the ensuing drive following the Cooper TD. With Trevor Brown back to punt, Anthony McGeary took the direct snap and handed the ball off to Lattieri who was lined up on the right side. After taking the handoff, Lattieri ran up the middle and found daylight around the left side for a 58-yard touchdown. The two-point attempt that tied the game at 14-14 was completed on a McGeary pass to Remington Diehl. The Bulldogs’ Reece Replogle blocked a 42-yard field goal attempt by Seth Schoffstall with no time left in the first half. Zach Campagna picked up the bouncing ball at the CK 7 and returned it 42 yards to end the half. … The Warriors’ scored twice in the fourth quarter as Schoffstall made a 32-yard field goal and Rylan Murdock crossed the goal line from 1-yard out to set the final with 4:07 left.

Records: Everett (2-8); Claysburg-Kimmel (3-7).

Next week: The season is over for C-K and Everett.
