PORTAGE — Seniors Lanee Berkhimer of Central and Ethan Haycisak of Central Cambria reign as the top runners in the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference, along with both the Central Cambria boys and girls teams.
Berkhimer won the girls race in a course record time of 17 minutes, 28.70 seconds, and Haycisak won the boys race in a course record time of 15:42.30 in the LHAC Cross Country Championships on Wednesday at Maple Crest Golf Course.
Berkhimer bested Somerset’s Libby Marteeny by more than 30 seconds to claim the girls title in a field of 144 runners. Somerset’s Emily Fisher was third with Bedford’s Chloe May, the previous course-record holder, fifth.
The Central Cambria girls won the team championship by besting the other three teams eligible for the team title. The Lady Red Devils placed four runners in the top 11 with Paige Alexander sixth, Delaney Snyder eighth, Alaina Long ninth and Alyson Sheehan 11th, and finished with 25 team points to Hollidaysburg’s 50.
Rylan Carney paced the Hollidaysburg girls with an overall 12th-place finish, and Bishop Carroll’s Abbey Hines was 13th.

Haycisak won the boys race by 11 seconds over Jonathan Gasper of Bellefonte in a field of 169 runners. Other standouts for Central Cambria were Reed Takacs (seventh) and Miles Doyle (ninth).
The Central Cambria boys won the team title in a tiebreaker over Hollidaysburg after both teams finished with 37 team points in the four-team championship competition. Joshua Bearer, CC’s sixth-place finisher, proved to be the difference maker by besting Hollidaysburg’s fifth and sixth finishers.
Hollidaysburg boasted three boys in the overall top six with Reuben Manfred third, Dean Sunderland fourth and Sam Chestney sixth. Bishop Carroll’s Noah Knoblach earned a 10th-place finish.

Williamsburg wins ICC
MEYERSDALE — Backed by Ava Dixon’s first-place finish, the Williamsburg girls cross country team captured the Inter-County Conference team title on Wednesday at Meyersdale High School.
Dixon bested the field of 40 runners with a time of 20 minutes, 7.6 seconds, which was nearly 16 seconds faster than second-place finisher Sophie Weyant of Windber. Emma Stone (eighth), Emma Biddle (ninth), Macy Norris (11th) and Adilyn Isenberg (27th) also contributed to the conference team title for the Lady Pirates.
George Nestlerode of Moshannon Valley won the boys race in 16:53.50 with Williamsburg’s Ryland Corl fourth and Tanner Ross sixth. Southern Fulton won the boys team title.
Northern Bedford’s Lily Miller was 10th and Carson Miller 12th in the girls race, and NBC’s Christopher Corle was seventh and Matthew Hess ninth in the boys race.
Juniata Valley’s top finishers were Caden Walters (10th in boys) and Eve McCrum (14th in girls).
