Hollidaysburg, Central doubles tennis teams exit in round 2

PIAA tennis

HERSHEY — Area doubles teams earned first-round victories in the PIAA Singles and Doubles Tennis Championships on Friday at Hershey Racquet Club before getting eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Hollidaysburg juniors Grace Muriceak and Crosby Denis, the District 6 3A doubles champions, opened play by beating Manheim Township’s Abby Martin, a freshman, and Maya Lamichane, a senior, 6-0, 6-1.

Murceak and Denis then faced District 1 champs, senior Kim Chen and junior Ava Bograd, of Council Rock South in the quarterfinals and fell, 6-3, 6-3, and were eliminated.

“The girls played an outstanding first match against a very good team, maybe the best match they’ve played all year,” Hollidaysburg coach Brian Denis said. “In the quarterfinals, I think they came out very nervous and spotted the other team a 4-0 lead. Once they settled in, they played right with them the rest of the way. We actually had several chances to take the lead and just couldn’t capitalize. It was an outstanding season, and to make it to the state quarterfinals is a tremendous accomplishment. Hopefully, they will want to work hard and come back for their senior year and finally crack into that semifinal round.”

Central seniors Zoe Grill and Kate Dunn, the D6 2A doubles champions, downed sophomores Rowan Bastian and Wren Best of Julia R. Masterman, 6-0, 6-2, in the first round.

Grill and Dunn then played District 7 champs, freshman Veronica Zinski and senior Marann Buckanovich of Winchester Thurston, in the quarterfinals and were beaten, 6-2, 6-0.

Bedford senior Kasey Shuke and junior Taylor Ruhlman, the D5 2A doubles champs, beat Montgomery seniors Cali Barnes and Madisyn Miller, 7-6 (4), 6-3, before losing to District 10 champs Lydia Beuchert and Ella Fetzner of Cathedral Prep, 6-3, 6-3.

Central Cambria senior Lydia Paskowski, the District 6 2A singles champion, fell to Constitution’s Medina Yuldasheva, sophomore, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round.

Chestnut Ridge junior Haley Hundley passed her first test in 2A singles, beating Danville’s Josie Bendle, 6-2, 6-2. Hundley, the three-time District 5 champ, then was beaten by Cathedral Prep junior Paige Patsy, 6-0, 6-2.

Defending state champ Addison Lindsay of Central Mountain, a junior, breezed in her opening round in Class 3A singles competition, beating Manheim Township’s Haley Miller, 6-0, 6-0. She then defeated Bethel Park junior Cami Fisher, 6-1, 6-2, and will play Penn-Trafford’s Amelia Williams in the semifinals at 8 a.m. Saturday with the finals scheduled for 1 p.m.
