Defense lifts Forest Hills to win at Central Cambria

H.S. football extra

EBENSBURG — Despite having little trouble moving the ball on offense, Central Cambria was unable to pull off the one big play to complete its possessions.

Four total turnovers, including two inside the red zone, hindered the Red Devils as Forest Hills took down Central Cambria 21-7 on Friday night.

“I’m very proud of how we battled and how physical we played,” Central Cambria coach Wade Klezek said. “We got into a bunch of great situations, but just came up short. It was a lot of plays on crucial money downs. We have to get better at those. If we capitalize on one or two, it’s a completely different game.”

On the second trip deep in Rangers territory, Central Cambria reached the Forest Hills 7 before an errant snap caused the Red Devils to lose 12 yards.

On the next play, the Rangers picked off a pass in the end zone.

Central Cambria racked up 224 yards of offense and matched Forest Hills in the first down column at 15-15.

Player of the game: Forest Hills quarterback Josh Myers completed 16 of 30 passes for 220 yards and three touchdowns.

The junior threw touchdown passes of 11 and 52 yards to Cam Vitez, then found Xander Richardson on a 13-yard fade route in the third quarter to earn his second straight victory while filling in for Richardson as signal caller.

Myers admitted he felt pressure early on when filling Richardson’s spot, but has handled it well by completing 26 of 46 passes for four touchdowns over the two games.

“It’s been a lot of pressure filling Xander’s shoes because he’s such a talented player,” Myers said. “But I know my teammates support me and have my back.”

Most vital statistic: The Rangers’ defense forced four total turnovers in the contest, as Logan Moss and Braydon Moss each recorded interceptions for Forest Hills, which also tallied two turnovers on downs.

Forest Hills allowed just 79 total yards of offense in the first half as the Rangers held a 14-0 lead at the break and a 21-0 advantage through three quarters.

“We talked pregame about our defense wanting to force more turnovers,” Forest Hills coach Justin Myers said. “For us to get four was big for us. It gave our offense more time and opportunities to do some things.”

Central Cambria was held off the board until Mason Pittsinger hit Brody Makosy on a 24-yard touchdown pass in the final frame.

Justin Myers: “We did some good things on both sides of the ball. Holding them off the board until the fourth quarter was big for us. We played a very good team. Central Cambria gave us a fight. They’re 2-5, but that is nowhere near indicative of the team they have.”

Klezek: “We played pretty darn solid in the second half. It’s just one play here or there and we could’ve been driving to tie the game at the end instead of being in panic mode. We’re still growing and progressing, though, and I’m very excited to see what we can accomplish.”

Notable: Jett Williams and Cam Stevens each recorded interceptions for the Red Devils.

Records: Forest Hills (6-1), Central Cambria (2-5).

Next week: Forest Hills hosts Bishop Guilfoyle, Central Cambria hosts Central.
