Defense, special teams key to Eagles’ victory

NEW PARIS — Tyrone’s offense was clicking on all cylinders Friday night, but the Golden Eagles’ defensive effort in the second half and a blocked extra point on special teams also factored heavily in the Eagles’ 35-34 victory over Chestnut Ridge in a Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference crossover game at Ridge’s Dr. Giovacchini Stadium.

Tyrone senior quarterback Ashton Walk ran for a pair of touchdowns and completed 26 of 38 passes for 299 yards and two touchdowns, including a 20-yard TD pass to senior wideout Tyler Weston with 5:50 to play that broke a 28-28 tie and gave Tyrone a 35-28 lead.

Ridge responded with an impressive drive of its own that senior back Haydan Webb capped off with a 1-yard run with 2:07 left that pulled the Lions to within a point at 35-34. Chestnut Ridge came up short on what would have been a game-tying PAT kick. The Lions got a low snap from center and Tyrone junior Eli Woomer partially deflected kicker Jonathan Sandoval-ronquillo’s attempt, preserving the Tyrone lead and victory.

Tyrone covered an onside kick and ran out the final minutes on the clock.

“Their center was going on the same snap count every time, and I was able to read it,” Woomer said of his special teams block. “It was a bad snap, and was able to get a hand on it.”

Walk, who ran for second-quarter touchdowns from 30 and two yards away, and also hit senior wideout Trent Adams with an 8-yard scoring pass in the first quarter, connected with Weston in the center of the end zone on a crossing route for the decisive fourth-quarter touchdown.

“My quarterback is the best player in the area,” Weston said of Walk. “I found some open space on that route and he found me. The way our offense is set up, anybody can get the ball at any time.”

That was the case Friday for Tyrone, as Woomer caught 10 passes for 93 yards, senior running back Seth Hoover and Adams caught five apiece for 63 and 49 yards respectively, and Weston made four receptions for 47 yards.

The victory earns Tyrone (6-4) the third seed in next weekend’s District 6 Class 3A tournament, and a semifinal-round game on the road against second-seeded Forest Hills.

“I think that our conditioning really helped us in the second half tonight,” Tyrone coach John Franco said. “These guys don’t quit, they just keep coming at you, and our skill guys just make plays.”

Plays of the game: Walk’s decisive touchdown pass to Weston gave Tyrone the lead for good, and Woomer’s block of the PAT kick preserved it.

Player of the game: Walk had a monster night in a game in which several players from both teams stood out.

Unsung heroes: Chestnut Ridge freshman quarterback Landyn Pincin, pressed into varsity starting duty for the first time, responded gallantly, completing 10 of 14 passes for 112 yards and two touchdown tosses to senior Owen Claycomb. Pincin also ran 11 yards for a touchdown for Ridge.

Most vital statistics: Ridge rolled up 254 yards in total offense in the first half, but Tyrone’s defense clamped down and allowed the Lions a total of just 62 yards in the second half.

Chestnut Ridge coach Max Shoemaker: “This was just a good high school football game. When you come out on the low end of the score in these games, it’s a bitter pill to swallow. Tonight, we were close, but we just couldn’t get it done at the end. They just made a couple more plays than we did.”

Records: Tyrone (6-4 overall and in the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference); Chestnut Ridge (4-6, 4-6).

Next week: Tyrone travels to Forest Hills for a District 6 Class 3A semifinal-round playoff game, while Chestnut Ridge visits Bedford for a District 5 Class 2A semifinal-round playoff game.
