BG plays at Mansion; Central travels far

PIAA football semis

Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic will play its PIAA Class 1A semifinal game against District 4 champion Canton at Mansion Park on Friday night at 7 p.m. one season after the Marauders had to travel to Steelton-Highspire’s home field to play in the semifinals.

Fellow District 6 champion Central got the opposite news on Sunday when the Dragons found out they will travel to WPIAL champion Central Valley for their PIAA Class 3A semifinal game. Central Valley played Bedford in the PIAA semifinals at Mansion Park last season.

The PIAA announced before the state playoffs began that all teams that won districts could have the opportunity to host their first inter-district playoff game following their district championship if they were the top team on the bracket and had a turf field.

BG, which just won the District 6 title over Juniata Valley on Friday, meets that criteria as does Central Valley, which topped North Catholic for the WPIAL championship on Saturday.

State College, the other District 6 champion that is still alive, is also on the top side of the bracket thus considered the home team in its Class 6A semifinal game against Mount Lebanon, but the Little Lions have already played an inter-district playoff game so did not meet the criteria to host the game. Instead, State College will play the WPIAL champions at Mansion Park on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Class 1A championship game will be held at Hersheypark Stadium on Thursday, Dec. 9 at

1 p.m., and the Class 3A title game will also be in Hershey on Saturday, Dec. 11 at noon.
