Central moves to 5-0 by routing Panthers
MARTINSBURG — Central and Penn Cambria both entered Friday’s game undefeated at 4-0, but it didn’t take long for Central to establish itself as the better team.
The Scarlet Dragons combined a quick-strike offense with a punishing defense to knock Penn Cambria from the ranks unbeaten with a 46-6 win at Roaring Spring Athletic Field.
Players of the game: Jeff Hoenstine completed 11-of-16 passes for 179 yards and four touchdowns, giving him 23 on the season. Parker Gregg scored three touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving. Gregg scored on a 39-pass play on the Central’s first offensive play, breaking through a pair of tacklers along the sideline before racing to the end zone. He added an 18-yard TD run in the second quarter and a 6-yarder in the third.
Gregg: “There’s a lot of guys on this team that can make plays. We have a great quarterback and a great line to support us.”
Play of the game: Hoenstine threw a lateral pass to Eli Lingenfelter who found a wide open Devon Boyles behind the defense for a 46-yard gain. Gregg scored on an 18-yard run the next play to put Central up 19-0 late in the first half.
Most vital statistics: PC quarterback Garrett Harrold entered the game as the area’s leading rusher and second-leading passer. Central harassed the junior signal caller the entire night, starting with back-to-back sacks on the first two plays of the game. Central held Harrold to just 4 yards rushing and 78 yards passing to go along with two interceptions. Penn Cambria managed just 139 yards of total offense.
Hoenstine: “(Harrold’s) a great player. We knew we had to contain him, or he was going to hurt us. We played physical and got after those guys. It was a hyped up game all week. Our guys really practiced hard and were really prepared for it.”
Unsung hero(es): The Central defense led by Gregg and Ethan Eicher in the middle at linebacker and Jason Clark pressuring Harrold off the edge.
Central coach Dave Baker: “Parker Gregg and Ethan Eicher are the defensive leaders at linebacker, and Jason Clark’s been playing well. It didn’t look like he’d be a starter at the beginning of the year, but he’s played so hard and so well. He has a motor.”
Penn Cambria coach Nick Felus: “Sometimes you get the bear, and sometimes the bear gets you. (Friday) the bear got us a little bit. We’re disappointed, but I can tell you right now this team will come back ready to work this weekend. We have all our goals still ahead of us. One game is not going to define our season. We’re going to turn the page quickly and move forward.”
Notable: In addition to his 46-yard completion, Lingenfelter led all receivers with four receptions for 72 yards, including a 42-yard touchdown catch and run in the first quarter. …Central needed just 28 seconds to score a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter for an early 13-0 lead. The first came on the opening offensive play, and the second took just two plays. The Scarlet Dragons needed just four plays to find the end zone on two other scoring drives.
Records: Penn Cambria (4-1); Central (5-0).
Next week: Penn Cambria hosts Central Cambria. Central visits Richland.
