Game sites determined for Guilfoyle, Bedford
Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic will have to travel to Steelton-Highspire for its PIAA Class 1A high school football semifinal game Saturday at 1 p.m.
Rather than have neutral sites host the state playoff games this postseason, the PIAA is allowing the “home” team, which means whichever team is on the top of the bracket, to host postseason games if its home field is worthy of hosting the event.
Bishop Guilfoyle coach Justin Wheeler said he was told Saturday night Steelton-Highspire’s War Memorial Veterans Field would be capable of hosting.
Bedford, which has been the top team in its bracket throughout its PIAA playoff run, deemed its stadium as too small to host and has played at Hollidaysburg and Windber the past two weeks.
On Friday, the Bisons will play at a third different site, Mansion Park, when Bedford takes on WPIAL champion Central Valley in the PIAA Class 3A semifinals at 7 p.m.
Mansion Park will also play host to a PIAA Class 6A semifinal on Saturday at
1 p.m. when District 3 champion Central York takes on District 10 champion McDowell.
McDowell has yet to actually play a state playoff game as it received a forfeit win over Erie in the District 10 championship two weeks ago and another forfeit over WPIAL champion Pittsburgh Central Catholic last week.
Hollidaysburg will also host two football games this weekend at Tiger Stadium as District 10 champion Cathedral Prep takes on District 1 winner Upper Dublin in a Class 5A semifinal on Friday before WPIAL champion Pine-Richland takes on District 3 champion Governor Mifflin in the other 5A semifinal on Saturday at 1 p.m.
