Tyrone finds a way again

SPRING MILLS — For the second week in a row on the road, Tyrone scored with fewer than 2 minutes on the clock to pull out a win. This Friday, the Golden Eagles scored with 1:38 left in the game for a 27-21 win over Penns Valley at the Penns Valley Area High School football field.

Play of the game: Tyrone quarterback Brandon Lucas hit Damon Gripp, who shook a defender with a double move, with a 45-yard pass down the left sideline for the winning score.

Player of the game: Gripp caught 11 passes for 139 yards and the winning touchdown. In the past two weeks, Gripp has caught 16 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns.

Unsung hero: Penns Valley’s Gage Ripka accounted for 15 of the Rams’ 21 points as he ran three times for 29 yards, caught seven passes for 48 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown reception, returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, and kicked three extra points.

Most vital statistic: On its final two drives of the game, Tyrone relied on its passing game, completing 8-of-13 passes for 111 yards and the winning touchdown.

Tyrone coach John Franco: “He (Damon Gripp) is just an outstanding, all-state player. When you have an all-state player like him, it is a luxury to go to. It is nice to have an all-state wide receiver who can make just about any play.”

Penns Valley coach Martin Tobias: “Special teams is one of three phases and we work very hard at it. Our kids take a lot of pride in it and it certainly paid off for us tonight.”

Notable: Penns Valley’s special teams kept it in the game as the Rams scored on a blocked punt, which it recovered in the end zone, and a 95-yard kickoff return.

Records: Tyrone (4-0); Penns Valley (1-2).

Next week: Philipsburg-Osceola at Tyrone, 7 p.m. Friday. Penns Valley at Central, 7 p.m. Friday.
