Pirates even record with playoffs looming

HOLLIDAYSBURG — If you were at Tiger Stadium in Hollidaysburg on Friday night and saw what the home sideline looked like, you may have thought the entire population of Williamsburg was in attendance.

The Blue Pirate faithful didn’t mind having to deal with a change of scenery to see their team play again, and they were treated to quite the show on senior night.

Williamsburg overcame an early turnover and racked up an early 24-point outburst as the Blue Pirates pounded West Branch, 38-12, in an Inter-County Conference match up.

Play of the game: The Blue Pirate defense forced a fumble at the Warrior 29-yard line, which later set up Jahmarea Wansley for a touchdown that put Williamsburg up 16-0 with 51 seconds left in the first quarter.

Player of the game: Williamsburg RB Tyler Clark had 12 carries for 75 yards and two touchdowns, including the one that put the Pirates up 24-0 early in the second quarter.

That wasn’t supposed to happen: West Branch was not intending to attempt an onside kick on the opening kickoff, but it ended up being recovered by the Warriors.

Williamsburg coach Ryan Hileman on the early adversity: “Obviously not what you want to see on the opening kickoff, turning it over right away, but we settled in and made some big plays.”

West Branch coach Kevin Hubler: “That’s a big break early in a big game, and (we) didn’t capitalize. That’s what it came down to. We were very evenly matched and as the game went on, I think people saw that. It was our job to bring them down to earth, and we did the exact opposite.”

Unsung hero(es): The Blue Pirate defense held the Warriors under 150 yards of total offense, and stuffed West Branch’s best opportunity to establish the tempo off the opening kickoff.

Most vital stat: West Branch forced two turnovers but scored no points off of them while Williamsburg turned its only turnover into the second touchdown of the game.

Williamsburg senior Wes McCall: “We just had to say, ‘guys we know what we came here to do.’ That doesn’t change anything. We know how dominant we can play, and our defense is good. That onside kick means nothing. We’ll get the ball back, and we need to take it down the field and that’s exactly what we did.”

Lending a helping hand: Williamsburg was able to play at Hollidaysburg after the Golden Tigers game with Carrick which was scheduled for Friday was canceled.

Williamsburg’s Ian Crouch: “All of Williamsburg, the school, the families, just the whole community is very thankful we were given the opportunity.”

Williamsburg RB Tyler Clark on the Pirates return to the postseason: “It makes all of the two-a-days and all the games losing by 40 and 50 worth it. Hopefully next week we can go in the playoffs and capitalize.”

Notable: It’s not certain where the Blue Pirates will play if they end up being a home team during any round of the postseason. … It was the senior night for 11 Blue Pirate football players. … The Blue Pirates were scheduled to play Everett next week, but that game is canceled because of their participation in the playoffs.

Records: West Branch (1-5); Williamsburg (3-3).

Next week: Williamsburg will play in the District 6 Class 1A playoffs against an opponent with a site and time TBA, while West Branch intends to continue its regular season.
