Panthers use big 3rd in win

LOYSBURG — Friday night’s Inter-County Conference matchup between Northern Bedford and Juniata Valley looked like it was going to end up as a defensive slugfest with both teams heading to the locker room tied at seven.

That was until the second half began.

The Panther offense exploded for a 22-point third quarter as they almost doubled up the Green Hornets, 36-19, on senior night at Panther Community Stadium.

That gives Northern Bedford its fourth straight win.

Play of the game: Northern Bedford’s Dalton Smith on the first play from scrimmage in the second half took a Thad Leidy pass from 60 yards out, sparking the 22-point outburst for the Panthers in the third quarter.

Player of the game: Smith had a combined 249 yards of total offense — and three TDs — rushing for 120 yards on 17 carries and racking up 129 yards receiving on four catches.

Unsung hero(es): Panther Thad Leidy was for 14-for-26 for 256 yards and three touchdowns passing. Kainen Baker’s interception return in the third ended the Hornets best chance for cutting the deficit back to one possession for the rest of the game.

Most vital stat(s): The Panther defense held the Hornets to just 87 yards passing and both teams turned the ball over a combined five times.

Northern Bedford coach Garry Black: “Juniata Valley has been in the final four with some of these kids. I knew this would be a playoff atmosphere, playoff environment. We needed a game like this. We’re growing up. We’ve been rattling some things off in a really good way. We took another step in the right direction.”

Juniata Valley coach Bill Musser: “Coming out in the second half, they hit that first play, I don’t think we responded too well to that too quickly. We lost our focus a little bit.”

Leidy: “It seems like every guy I threw to could just bust a big play at any time. They’re all so quick.Everybody’s worked so hard.”

Notable: Northern Bedford welcomed in 350 fans after Gov. Tom Wolf’s order allowing for more fans to attend sporting events went into effect. … There was only a total of six penalties called in the game. … Jayce Rand and Gabe Brower both nearly had 100 yards on the ground and scored one touchdown each for JV.

Records: Juniata Valley (3-2), Northern Bedford (4-1).

Next week: Juniata Valley hosts Glendale while Northern Bedford travels to Claysburg-Kimmel on Friday.
