Marauders dominate Westmont

Bishop Guilfoyle entered its Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference matchup with Westmont Hilltop knowing that it needed to stay disciplined on defense in order to deal with the ground and pound, clock-eating offensive system of the Hilltoppers.

The Marauders’ defense was able to get off the field on all but two Westmont possessions, while the offense was able to turn the tables by scoring on long drives on the only two chances it had in the opening half.

Guilfoyle dominated all aspects of play in earning a 39-0 victory on Saturday night at Mansion Park.

Bishop Guilfoyle coach Justin Wheeler: “We only had two possessions in the first half, and we scored twice. … We were happy with where we were, we were happy with how our defense played. So, at the end of the day, it was definitely a full team win.”

Play of the game: Westmont took the opening kickoff and churned out the clock with a 12-play, nearly eight-minute drive that ended when quarterback Alex Ray dropped back to pass, the only pass attempt by the Hilltoppers in the game, but was intercepted by Bishop Guilfoyle’s Keegan Myrick. Myrick returned the ball 20 yards to the BG 45. Ten plays later, the Marauders found the end zone when Haiden Garner hauled in a 15-yard pass from Konner Kiesewetter just four seconds into the second quarter.

Player of the game: Kiesewetter was 9-of-11 passing for 119 yards and three touchdown passes. In addition to the 15-yard TD strike to Garner, the duo also hooked up on a 9-yard touchdown at the start of the fourth. The senior also tossed a 29-yard scoring pass to Myrick and crossed the goal line himself on a 1-yard QB keeper to make the score 33-0.

Unsung hero(es): The Guilfoyle defense only allowed drives of more than seven plays on three occasions. It allowed just 137 yards of total offense — all via the run. The Marauders’ ‘D’ also came up with a safety when Ray was tackled out of the back of the end zone in the third quarter.

Most vital statistic: The passing yardage difference was 119-0 in favor of BG.

Wheeler: “What we told our defense was, ‘They (Westmont) are going to get first downs. They’re going to get some yards. But, every time they get a first down, you’ve got to reset and, at some point, all you’ve got to be better than them is for four plays.’ … We knew once we could get them behind the sticks and force them to do something they don’t want to do, we liked our chances and that’s what happened.”

Westmont coach Pat Barron: “I thought we kept them (BG) from the big play, I thought we made them drive the ball. Defensively, I was really proud of our effort. But, offensively, we have to put points on the board and finish the drives. That falls on me.”

Kiesewetter: “Keegan made that huge pick, and a lot of it’s field position. He set us up in great position with the return. We were able to drive down the field and score. That was huge because when you can get up on a team like that, that slows the game down, it’s hard (for them) to come back.”

Notable: BG kicker Deven Wyandt drilled a 17-yard field goal at 1:45 of the third to make the score 19-0. In addition to making good on two extra point attempts, Wyandt’s only punt of the night hit and rolled 49 yards to the WH 1, setting up the safety … Karson Kiesewetter capped off the scoring when he followed up a 33-yard run with a 7-yard TD burst at 3:15 of the final quarter … The Hilltoppers were whistled for one penalty (a 10-yard block in the back), while the Marauders were tagged with six for 50 yards … Garner hauled in four passes for 42 yards and ran eight times for 60. Meanwhile, Myrick carried 19 times for 59 yards and caught three balls for 52 yards.

Records: Westmont Hilltop (2-2); Bishop Guilfoyle (2-2).

Next week: Westmont Hilltop hosts Forest Hills on Friday, while Bishop Guilfoyle entertains Chestnut Ridge next Saturday.
