First-half explosion fuels Panthers’ win

LOYSBURG — Northern Bedford was just as efficient on defense as it was on offense.

Everett entered the Inter-County Conference battle already missing its players from its co-op with Southern Fulton, who were unable to play due to a school shutdown, as well as a few key starters.

The Black Panthers showed no mercy as the defense shut down the Warriors on nearly every possession — giving way to an offense that scored on all seven possessions in the opening half as NBC rolled to a dominating 57-0 victory on Friday night at Panther Community Stadium.

Play of the game: On just the second play from scrimmage in the opening quarter, Everett was already backed up to its own end zone. When quarterback Ian Klahre rolled out to the left, he was quickly met by NBC senior defensive end Dakota Claar who rocked the signal caller for a safety just 53 seconds into the contest.

Players of the game: The Northern Bedford defense set up its offense in Everett territory on six of the eight TDs scored. The other two were started at their own 35 and 49, respectively. In addition to the Claar safety, the defense stuffed Klahre, who was playing due to starter Malex Akers being out, for minus 32 yards on 14 rushing attempts. With the starters only playing the opening half, NBC surrendered just 32 yards of offense.

Unsung hero(es): NBC’s Dalton Smith carried the ball nine times for 137 yards, while QB Thad Leidy was 7-for-8 for 143 yards and two TD passes. Brady Clark caught two of those passes for 88 yards … Leidy scored the first touchdown of the game when he ran in from 4 yards out … Smith made it 30-0 when he scored on a 38-yard run in the second quarter … Clark and Leidy connected on a 45-yard pass play that made it 37-0.

Most vital statistic(s): Northern Bedford put 50 points on the board in the opening half with 168 yards on the ground and 143 through the air to own a 311-32 edge in total yards.

NB coach Garry Black: “It was a goal to come out, start strong and get after it, and we did. We executed very well. I’ve not been in a situation where our team executed as well as they did (tonight) … Our kids have practiced hard, they’ve put the work in and they executed everything that first half. I’ve never seen anything like that. I’ve been coaching for close to 20 years. That’s just kudos to our guys.”

Everett coach Dave Lightner: “We brought 19 guys — so many injuries. We lost our Southern Fulton kids (because) they shut down. So, we didn’t have many practice players for the week and it showed in that way too. I commend our guys on their attitude and effort. Our backs were against the wall. We did what we could — we fought.”

Claar: “We’ve had a pretty good defense since I’ve started here. It’s always something to live up to … I just got to get him (Klahre). I can’t let him scramble out.”

Notable: Cadin Ebersole scored twice for the Black Panthers on runs of 6 and 2 yards, while Kainen Brown scored from 1 yard out. … Leidy found Evan Clouse on an 8-yard pass play to account for the starters’ points. … With the JV playing the entire second half, Ben Gable’s interception and 34-yard return set up the only points after halftime as Lucas Heck scored from 3 yards out on the first play to set the final. … Klahre finished with 98 passing yards for Everett … Late in the game, the Warriors appeared ready to score but Klahre fumbled the ball and NBC’s Nick Price recovered to give possession back to the home squad, who took a knee to end the contest.

Records: Everett (0-4); Northern Bedford (3-1).

Next week: Everett hosts Mount Union next Friday, while Northern Bedford entertains Juniata Valley.
