Eagles snatch victory

WINGATE — Trailing 12-9 deep into the fourth quarter, Tyrone drove 94 yards on just four plays to score the winning touchdown with just 1:34 left to pull out a 15-12 win Friday over Bald Eagle Area at Alumni Stadium.

Play of the game: With Tyrone receiver Damon Gripp heavily covered, running back Tommy Hicks snuck out of the backfield on a pass route. When a Bald Eagle Area defensive back fell down, quarterback Brandon Lucas found Hicks wide open down the left sideline for the winning 20-yard touchdown pass.

Player of the game: Gripp caught five passes for 133 yards and a touchdown and intercepted a pass on defense.

Unsung hero: Bald Eagle Area quarterback Garrett Burns ran 23 times for 127 yards and a touchdown, threw a touchdown pass and averaged 49.5 yards on two punts.

Most vital statistic: Bald Eagle Area turned the ball over five times in the first half, with four interceptions and a lost fumble.

Golden Eagles coach John Franco: “We finally put one good drive together at the end. This team needed a win like that. In years past we would have hung our heads and just found ways to lose. This group really came together and it found a way to win. As much as it irritates me that we did not execute, we found a way to win when our offense did everything it could to prevent a win. Sometimes you need a game like that. It will make for some good teaching points.”

Bald Eagle Area coach Jesse Nagle: “We know we’re going to be very good. If we don’t turn over the ball, I don’t know if they’re in the game. That’s something we’ve got to get better at and that’s how we turn the corner and make us a really good team.”

Notable: Lucas completed 3-of-3 passes for 75 yards and the winning touchdown on Tyrone’s final drive of the game.

Records: Tyrone 3-0; Bald Eagle Area 1-2.

Next week: Tyrone at Penns Valley, 7 p.m. Friday; Bald Eagle Area at Philipsburg-Osceola, 7 p.m. Friday.
