RB’s absence doesn’t snap 3-game Rocket streak

ORBISONIA — Southern Huntingdon’s Zach Hunsinger tore up the Claysburg-Kimmel defense for 113 yards and one touchdown, while Rocket quarterback Nate Myers added 105 yards on the ground and another 76 through the air, to account for two more scores as Southern Huntingdon took down the Bulldogs 18-7 Friday night. Claysburg’s Joseph Noah finished with 109 yards on eight carries.

Play of the game: With the ball resting at the Southern Huntingdon 22 on a second-and-14, Hunsinger broke through the Bulldog defense for a 78-yard scoring run that gave the Rockets an 18-7 lead with just 6:24 left in the contest.

Player of the game: Hunsinger helped carry the Rocket ground game with the absence of Kendrel Marino who was out due to a foot injury from last week’s game against Mount Union.

Unsung hero(es): The Southern Huntingdon linebackers, including Aaron Kough and Jon Balles, who made numerous tackles for losses and kept the pressure on Bulldog quarterback Caleb Oakes most of the night.

Most vital statistic(s): After Noah’s 61-yard scoring run midway through the first quarter, the Bulldog rusher had just 48 yards rushing.

Southern Huntingdon coach Aaron Batzel: “We are blessed to have a lot of speed on this team and Hunsinger is part of that speed. It’s great to have the option of both Hunsinger and Marino and with Myers out there running the offense. Hunsinger is a tough runner and it was nice for him to come out big tonight, especially on senior night.”

Claysburg-Kimmel coach Matt Bilchak: “It’s tough to replace a player like (C-K starting QB) Corey (Chamberlain), but for a sophomore, I felt Caleb came in and performed well tonight. He just didn’t make the plays down the stretch.”

Notable: While the Rockets were without Marino, the Bulldogs were also missing quarterback Corey Chamberlain who went down with a broken leg last week against Tussey Mountain.

Records: Southern Huntingdon (3-0); Claysburg-Kimmel (1-2).

Next week: Southern Huntingdon is home for West Branch, while Claysburg travels to Juniata Valley.
