Marino, Myers carry Rockets to win over Pirates
ORBISONIA — Williamsburg struck first on a Wes McCall 6-yard touchdown run during the first quarter of Friday evening’s season opener at Southern Huntingdon. However, the Rockets answered with a pair of scores in the second period, then Nate Myers added a 22-yard touchdown in the third to help seal a 20-6 victory over the visiting Blue Pirates.
Play of the game: Southern Huntingdon’s Kendrel Marino capped off a four-play 25-yard drive from the 5-yard line with 38 seconds left in the second quarter to put the Rockets up 14-6 at the half.
Player of the game: Southern Huntingdon quarterback Nate Myers carried 16 times for 65 yards and one touchdown and also completed six passes for 64 yards and another score.
Unsung hero(es): Southern Huntingdon’s Aaron Kough sacked Williamsburg quarterback Lambert Palmer for a 9-yard loss with just under three minutes left in the first half and helped set up the Rockets’ go-ahead score.

Southern Huntingdon coach Aaron Batzel’s quote: “Williamsburg’s offense is something you don’t see often. It’s kind of like a single wing with some motion behind it and they do a lot of trickery. It took our linebackers a while to adjust, but when we figured out who to key on, we were alright on that end.”
Williamsburg coach Ryan Hileman’s quote: “We came out and were able to do things offensively with success. But, then we had a couple bad things happen and the morale went down, but we were still in the game. Southern’s line was getting a push on our line and took away our running game.”
Notable: Williamsburg quarterback Lambert Palmer completed 10 of 28 pass attempts for 68 yards … Wes McCall caught five of those passes for 49 yards … Southern finished with 132 yards on 43 carries.
Records: Williamsburg (0-1), Southern Huntingdon (1-0).
Next week: Williamsburg hosts Juniata Valley. Southern Huntingdon is at Mount Union.
