Harrold, Marinak carry the load for Panthers
CRESSON — Penn Cambria played an all-around strong offensive game, posting 485 total yards, as the Panthers were able to earn their second win of the season with a 49-27 victory over Somerset on Friday night.
Plays of the game: Penn Cambria ran three plays that gained over 50 yards, all of which set up scoring plays shortly after. Sophomore quarterback Garrett Harrold scrambled 54 yards on a broken pass play, while senior wide receiver Nick Marinak caught a 54-yard pass from Harrold and took a jet sweep for a 63-yard run. In total, the Panthers had four scoring drives of four or less plays.
Player of the game: Harrold completed 8-of-13 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 148 yards on 17 carries and an additional score.
Unsung heroes: The Penn Cambria wide receivers. Marinak caught four passes for 87 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 74 yards and a touchdown on just two carries.
Most vital statistics: Somerset fumbled four times on offense, with three being lost. One of the lost fumbles came on the Penn Cambria 5-yard line, which if the Golden Eagles had scored, the lead would have been cut to one possession in the third quarter.
Penn Cambria head coach Nick Felus: “(Harrold) has command of the offense right now. When we need to make a play, he makes plays. Obviously, up front with our guys on the perimeter, I thought our receivers Jake Tsikalas, Brandon Storm, Nick Marinak and Cole Eberhart did a great job on the perimeter and blocking downfield. Our line did an excellent job as well.”
Somerset head coach Brian Basile: “Every time we felt we got it going, they’d get a big play. At halftime, we were down, but we didn’t pack it in. We fought. We fought hard. I’m proud of the effort we gave.”
Penn Cambria quarterback Garrett Harrold: “The O-line did tremendous in helping me with my performance tonight. I just thought we played very well as a team, and just to carry the momentum for the next game is what we need to do.”
Records: Penn Cambria 2-0, Somerset 0-2.
Next week: Cambria Heights at Penn Cambria, Bishop Guilfoyle at Somerset.
