BG has success on road
SIDMAN — Justin Wheeler’s 100th career football coaching victory at Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School occurred in a cakewalk.
Senior running back Keegan Myrick rushed for 143 yards on nine carries and scored two touchdowns, and junior wideout-quarterback Haiden Garner ran for 91 yards and two scores on seven carries, as BG evened its season record at 1-1 by rolling to a 48-0 Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference victory over Forest Hills Friday night at G.H. Miller Memorial Stadium.
Play(s) of the game: Myrick had touchdown runs of 55 yards in the first quarter and 64 in the second quarter as BG built a 35-0 halftime lead and set the mercy-rule clock into play for the entire second half.
Player of the game: Myrick accomplished his rushing totals in less than two quarters of play.
Unsung hero(es): The Marauders’ defense pitched a shutout, and BG’s offensive line helped the Marauders gain 345 of their 419 total yards via the ground.
Most vital statistic: BG rolled up 310 yards of total offense in the first half alone, 264 of which came via the rush.
Bishop Guilfoyle coach Justin Wheeler: “This was a good win for us. To get back into the win column (after last week’s season-opening loss to Richland) was a positive. We have some kids who are really skilled offensively. Keegan is one of the best players in the state, while Haiden Garner, (senior fullback) Zach McCloskey, and (senior quarterback) Konnor Kiesewetter all had good games tonight. We want to make sure that we spread the ball around, and strive for balance.”
Forest Hills coach Justin Myers: “We came out in the first quarter, and the kids battled. In the second quarter, we fell behind, and that took the air out of our sails. We’re a young team, but we’re getting better. We’ve got to stay positive.”
Myrick: “We knew coming in that we could rush the ball, but the key was getting everybody involved. We have several players who are offensive threats, and when they all play together, we’re a very dangerous team.”
BG junior guard-defensive end Colin Butler: “Our offensive line really stepped up from last week, and it definitely felt good to get this win and to shut them out.”
Wheeler’s milestone: Wheeler now has a career coaching record of 100-23 in 10 seasons at BG, and his coaching tenure has produced three PIAA Class 1A state championships and a fourth appearance in the title game. He gave credit to the talented players under his charge for the past decade.
“This is my 10th year, and to get 100 wins, I want to thank all the players who I’ve coached,” Wheeler said. “They’ve been incredible.”
Notable: BG opened the scoring on a 13-yard rollout pass from Kiesewetter to senior tight end Andrew Yanoshak in the first quarter, which was set up by a fumble recovery and 61-yard return by sophomore defensive back Cooper Rother … Garner caught a 6-yard scoring pass from Kiesewetter and also ran 32 yards for another touchdown, both in the second quarter. He also completed three passes for 40 yards, and caught three for 21 … McCloskey ran 11 yards for a third-quarter touchdown, and sophomore Ryan Donoughe tacked on BG’s final touchdown with a 2-yard fourth-quarter run … Sophomore Karson Kiesewetter intercepted a pass for BG, while juniors Nick Caddy and Easton Toth recorded an interception and fumble recovery, respectively, for Forest Hills.
Records: Bishop Guilfoyle (1-1 overall and in the conference); Forest Hills (0-2 overall and in conference).
Next Friday: Bishop Guilfoyle visits Somerset; Forest Hills hosts Chestnut Ridge.
