Volleyball, soccer, football playoff sites announced

The four remaining high school girls volleyball teams and six area soccer teams learned where they will be playing when the first round of the PIAA playoffs begin on Tuesday.

District 6 Class 1A girls volleyball champion Northern Cambria will begin its quest to repeat as PIAA champion when it plays Fort Cherry at Forest Hills Tuesday at 6 p.m. Class 1A runner-up Bishop Carroll will travel to Cranberry Township’s North Catholic High School to play Bishop Canevin at 7:30 p.m.

Central Cambria will play District 3 champion Trinity at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg at 6 p.m. in 2A, and Class 3A champion Hollidaysburg will take on undefeated District 3 champion Palmyra at Hempfield High School in Landisville at 6:30 p.m.

In high school girls Class 1A soccer, District 5 runner-up Everett will play WPIAL champion Shady Side at Hampton High School in Allison Park at 6 p.m.

Bedford will begin its quest to defend its PIAA Class 2A championship with a game Tuesday in Somerset against South Park at 5 p.m.

That same night, Hollidaysburg will stay close to home. The Lady Tigers will play WPIAL third-place finisher West Allegheny at 5:30 p.m. at Mansion Park in part of a doubleheader with the Hollidaysburg boys. The boys will also play West Allegheny in a game set to start at 7:30 p.m.

The Altoona boys will also be close as they travel to Hollidaysburg to take on WPIAL runner-up Mount Lebanon at 5:30 p.m. in a Class 4A game. In the second half of a doubleheader there, District 6 Class 1A champion Bishop Carroll will play WPIAL runner-up Winchester Thurston at 7:30 p.m.

Football sites

State College and Hollidaysburg will play subregional high school football playoff games against District 10 opponents Friday night.

The Golden Tigers will stay close, playing Oil City at Saint Francis, and the Little Lions will play in Erie against McDowell at Veterans Stadium.

Three District 5 championships will also be decided Friday night when Northern Bedford plays Tussey Mountain in the Class 1A title game at Hollidaysburg. The game is a rematch of the regular season contest, won by the Titans, 32-22.

In Windber, Berlin Brothersvalley plays Chestnut Ridge in the Class 2A title game. The Lions ended Berlin’s season last year.

Westinghouse will play Bedford in the District 5-8-9 Class 3A championship at Somerset in a game the Bisons won by a lopsided margin last season.

Bishop Guilfoyle and Portage will host a pair of District 6 Class 1A quarterfinals Friday. The Marauders play Bishop McCort in a Week 10 rematch of BG’s 22-7 win. The Mustangs will play Heritage Conference foe Purchase Line.

On Saturday, in Class 2A, undefeated Bellwood-Antis travels to undefeated Ligonier Valley for a game the Rams won last season.

Two more District 6 Class 1A quarterfinals will also be held, with Claysburg-Kimmel traveling to Saltsburg, and Homer-Center will travel to Juniata Valley.
