Survive and advance: Behind Myrick, Marauders pull out quarterfinal win
It wasn’t easy but Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic is moving on in the District 6 Class 1A football playoffs.
Guilfoyle got another yeoman-like offensive performance from Keegan Myrick and a late fumble recovery by Adrian Johnson to hold off Bishop McCort, 14-7, Friday night at Mansion Park.
The quarterfinal victory moves BG, the No. 1 seed, into the D6 1A semifinals next Friday at Mansion against the winner of today’s match between Claysburg-Kimmel and Saltsburg.
McCort’s Will Miller returned the opening kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown that was the only scoring in the first half as neither team generated much offense.
Myrick, BG’s outstanding junior, broke a 26-yard TD run early in the third quarter and also rushed for the two-point conversion to give the Marauders an 8-7 advantage.
In the first minute of the fourth quarter, Myrick scored again on an 11-yard jaunt to make it 14-7. Miller returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards for an apparent TD, but a blindside block wiped out that score and it remained 14-7 until the visiting Crimson Crushers made a push in the final four minutes.
Aided by a roughing-the-passer penalty on a fourth-and-6, McCort moved to the BG 26. Miller then rambled for 18 yards to the BG 8, but, on the next play, Miller and running back Brendon Bair botched a handoff and Johnson pounced on it for the Marauders at the 7 with 1:38 left.
Two running plays by Myrick netted 10 yards and the game was over.
Play of the game: Adrian Johnson recovered a McCort fumble at the BG 7 with 1:38 left and the Marauders held on for the win.
Player of the game: BG’s Keegan Myrick rushed for 192 yards on 41 carries and scored all 14 points for the Marauders.
Unsung hero: BG defensive lineman Cameron Maloney, who helped the Marauders hold the McCort offense to less than 100 yards. He also punted five times — four of them unreturnable.
Most vital statistic: McCort had only five first downs and 99 yards of offense.
BG coach Justin Wheeler: “McCort’s a really good football team. We knew we were in for a battle like the last time.
“But, what I liked was there was no quit. We got some penalties and some turnovers, but we found a way to shut them out defensively.
Wheeler on Maloney’s play: “He’s one of our best defensive lineman and he’s moved into the punting role. He did a phenomenal job to kick it away from guys.”
Maloney on his night: “We didn’t do too well in the first half but we knew we had to stop them the second half and not let them score.
“I’ve been punting since the third or fourth week when our regular punter got hurt. I practice a lot every week and enjoy it.”
McCort coach Brian Basile: “We cleaned some things up from the last time (a 22-7 loss two weeks ago) and I’m so proud of our tremendous effort. Our team grew up tonight.”
Basile on his team’s last fumble: “I think the play was there, but we’ll have to look at the exchange on the film and see just what happened there.”
Basile on Myrick: “We changed our defense a little bit (from the last game). We were in a 3-2 stack last time and in a 5-3 tonight. I think the extra man on the line helped us, but we knew we were getting a big dose of him. He’s a heckuva an athlete.”
Myrick on the emotions of the game: “It’s a playoff game and they aren’t supposed to be easy. (McCort) hit the hardest of any team we played.”
Myrick on his 41 carries: “No wonder I’m a little beat up, but it doesn’t matter as long as we get the win. It’s a team effort.”
Records: Guilfoyle (9-2); McCort (6-6)
Next week: BG hosts Saltsburg or Claysburg-Kimmel on Friday night.
