Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic avenged a loss in last year’s District 6 Class 1A semifinals and downed Juniata Valley, 36-17, with a fourth-quarter flurry Friday at Mansion Park in the district championship.

The Marauders won their fourth title in the past six years but their first since 2016. Bishop Guilfoyle rushed for 295 yards and limited Juniata Valley to just 73 yards on the ground — 61 of those coming on a Jacob Hensor lateral for a touchdown.

“This team has faced so much adversity with injuries and things, and that’s why it was so emotional at the end of the game,” Bishop Guilfoyle coach Justin Wheeler said. “These guys have worked and battled, and we’ve just been next guy up all year. For them to win a district title, I’m super excited for these guys to be one of the final four in the state.”

Play of the game: With 8:24 left to play in the game and Juniata Valley trailing 21-17 with the ball, Caden Rupert dropped back to pass and was sacked by Andrew Yanoshak on a blind-side hit. Hayden Fox recovered the fumble, and Konner Kiesewetter scored on a quarterback sneak five plays later to extend Bishop Guilfoyle’s lead to 29-17.

Player of the game: Keegan Myrick, battling a leg injury that limited him to just one defensive play (on which he got a key interception, “one snap, one pick,” Myrick said after the game), rushed for 114 yards, two touchdowns and a two-point conversion on 26 carries.

Unsung hero: Kiesewetter returned from injury to play quarterback for the Marauders and made several key plays. He found Yanoshak on a 9-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring, had a 4-yard touchdown run and caught a two-point conversion pass from Sam Homan on a trick play. He also connected with Homan on a pair of key first-down passes.

Most vital statistic: Juniata Valley never held the lead. A year ago, the Green Hornets jumped ahead early, and the Marauders never caught up.

Bishop Guilfoyle coach Justin Wheeler on Myrick: “With the injury he had, we weren’t sure what he’d be able to do tonight. He’s such a tough kid, and he hammered his physical therapy this week. He made plays when we needed him to make them, and it’s just a testament to how hard he works that he was out there tonight.”

Myrick: “I really can’t thank Drayer (Physical Therapy) enough. I was in there twice a day, morning and after school, to try and get better. I didn’t practice at all. Just got ready for this game, and with a patella injury, this was the best I was going to get.”

Juniata Valley coach Bill Musser: “The three things that stick with me about this team is that they truly played for each other, they never quit and I never had to ask them to work hard. They were always ready to take accountability for their actions.”

Rupert: “I’m definitely going to miss this group of guys. We might have had a better run last year, but the season we had this year was unlike any other. I’m going to miss these guys more than anything.”

Notable: Jack Donoughe also had an interception for Bishop Guilfoyle. … Zach McCloskey ran for a game-high 129 yards, including a 42-yard touchdown run that closed out the scoring, for the Marauders. … Brower caught six passes for 88 yards for the Green Hornets. … Rupert finished with more than 1,900 yards passing and 22 touchdowns — tied with Northern Bedford’s Thad Leidy for the most in the area. … Hensor also caught a 44-yard touchdown pass. … Lackawanna Trail — BG’s next opponent — defeated Juniata Valley, 24-14, in last year’s PIAA Class 1A semifinal.

Records: Bishop Guilfoyle (11-2); Juniata Valley (10-3)

Next week: Bishop Guilfoyle will play Lackawanna Trail, a 26-13 winner over Muncy, in the PIAA semifinals. Juniata Valley’s season is complete.
