Fast start too much for Titans

SLIPPERY ROCK — Farrell’s first play from scrimmage was a telling one.

Anthony Stallworth raced 53 yards for a touchdown, the Steelers found the end zone on their first four possessions and cruised to a 60-14 PIAA Class 1A football playoff win over Tussey Mountain Saturday afternoon at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

Farrell led 42-0 by halftime and 60-0 after three quarters.

Play of the game: Brice Butler returned a punt 61 yards for a Farrell touchdown in the second quarter, opening up a 29-0 lead.

Players of the game: Stallworth rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns, Harrison 103 yards and a score.

Unsung hero: Tussey Mountain’s Tyler Rhodes caught passes of 31 and 32 yards late in the game — one for a touchdown — as the Titans avoided the shutout.

Most vital statistic: Farrell rolled up 430 rushing yards, 276 in the first half.

Farrell coach Anthony Peagues: “We knew coming in we’d have a size advantage up front. They put nine players in the box at times and we were still able to run through it.”

Tussey Mountain coach Anthony Sottasante: “We were giving up 70 to 80 pounds per player up front and they played with more emotion than we did. When you’re up against a physically superior team playing with that kind of emotion, it’s tough.

“Our seniors were 2-18 their first two years, 19-5 their last two. That shows what they’ve done for this program.”

Tussey Mountain running back Tyler Rhodes: “That defense is so big and so fast. It didn’t go our way today, but our goal since April was to get here. And we made it.”

Notable: Farrell had three TDs called back by penalties, including a 77-yard punt return. … The Steelers never punted on the day. … Tussey Mountain managed only 51 yards on 26 carries in the first half.

Records: Farrell (11-2), Tussey Mountain (11-2)

Next week: Farrell plays Coudersport in the PIAA 1A quarterfinals.
