Bartolini gets best of ’Dogs
SALTSBURG– Claysburg-Kimmel’s 2019 football season came to an end after a 39-14 loss against Saltsburg in a District 6 Class 1A football playoff game on a chilly but almost windless Saturday night at Saltsburg High School.
Angelo Bartolini scored three touchdowns on the ground for the fourth-seeded Trojans. Josh Gibbons threw for two touchdowns.
Seth Musselman rushed for 55 yards and a 12-yard touchdown run that opened the scoring. Kobe Harr added a 32-yard touchdown run later in the opening period. He led the Bulldogs with 71 rushing yards.
“This team and this season was a crazy roller-coaster ride, with all the adversity that we went through throughout the course of the year,” Claysburg-Kimmel coach Matt Bilchak said. “I was proud of the way that we’ve handled the situations. Through the good times and the bad I was proud that we’re developing the leadership that we need to develop into a consistently winning program.”
Play of the game: Gino Bartolini completed a halfback option pass to Nathan Slapinski for the touchdown that put Saltsburg ahead for good just before halftime.
Player of the game: Angelo Bartolini rushed for a game-best 206 yards.
Unsung heroes: Slapinski led the Trojans with a game-high five receptions for 95 yards.
Most vital statistics: Saltsburg rolled up 401 total yards, limited Claysburg-Kimmel to 199 yards, and forced three turnovers.
Bilchak: “The last couple of weeks we were able to be on the positive end of making the plays that we needed. And tonight we had a lot of turnovers that hurt us. And you can’t do that, especially this deep in the playoffs.”
Saltsburg coach Mike Leasure: “Claysburg-Kimmel has a tough defense. They’re physical and we were able to run the ball tonight, which was huge.”
Claysburg-Kimmel quarterback Corey Chamberlain : “Our first quarter was great. We were able to sustain drives. We had all the momentum on our side. (And) just like that, it changed.”
Angelo Bartolini: “Saltsburg has always been a second-half team for as long as I have played. So I wasn’t worried at all (about falling behind early). I just knew we were going to come out in the second half and play our best.”
Notable: Gibbons set up his own 4-yard touchdown pass to Tristian Roessler in the first quarter with a 57-yard kickoff return. … Angelo Bartolini’s 2-yard touchdown run cut the Bulldogs’ lead to 14-13 early in the second period …. Gibbons, Saltsburg’s multi-talented quarterback, completed 9 of 15 passes for 103 yards. … Chamberlain connected on 8 of 17 passes for 92 yards. He threw two interceptions. … Roessler caught two touchdown passes, including one from Gibbons. … Saturday’s game was the first home playoff game in the history of Saltsburg football.
