Paddock’s opening kickoff return sparks Tigers

DuBOIS — Hollidaysburg scored early and often, including taking the opening kickoff back 78 yards for a touchdown, in the opening half to take a 41-6 lead behind a 27-point second quarter to spoil DuBois’ senior night festivities with a 41-18 victory for its third win in a row Friday night at Mansell Stadium.

Play of the game: Hollidaysburg’s Trent Paddock took the opening kickoff 78 yards along the far sideline, going practically untouched for a score just 11 seconds into the game.

Player of the game: DuBois freshman quarterback Cam-Ron Hays finished 18-of-26 passing for 209 yards and a pair of touchdowns along with one interception in just his second career start for the Beavers.

Unsung hero: Hollidaysburg’s Hunter Barr only got eight carries on the night, but made the most of them, taking three in for touchdowns, all in the second quarter, to finish the game with 31 yards on the ground.

Most vital statistic: DuBois turned the ball over four times in the loss, three by way of fumble along with an interception by James Boykin Jr. Both teams were plagued by turnovers on the night, as Hollidaysburg finished with 10 for 95 yards while DuBois was flagged 11 times for 101 yards.

Hollidaysburg coach Homer DeLattre: On starting the game strong, “That’s one of our focus points, because the last couple weeks we hadn’t.” “We’ve been so close all year long with kickoff returns, we’ve probably had a half a dozen that were close and tonight we finally got one, so that was great.”

DuBois coach Justin Marshall: On his team allowing the opening kickoff touchdown: “We had a player come off that should have been out there, we were playing with ten and they returned it right back up the hole. That was just a big mistake to start the game and obviously that’s huge momentum and Hollidaysburg’s a good program, they don’t need any help.”

Hollidaysburg’s Trent Paddock: On his opening kickoff return for a score, “We always start off slow and I think this game we really got off to a good start.” “We just got some good blocks on there and that gave us the mentality that we could come out here and do it again, they’re (DuBois) a good team and all, we really studied hard to beat them and came out and got the win.”

Notable: DuBois finished with a 293-235 edge in total yards, but the pair of special teams scores along with several short drives set up by turnovers aided Hollidaysburg.

Records: DuBois (0-9), Hollidaysburg (5-4)

Next week: DuBois visits Brookville. Hollidaysburg hosts Central.
