Altoona Area High School’s football woes continued Friday night when the Mountain Lions fell to Cumberland Valley, 59-14, on homecoming at Mansion Park.

Altoona, winless in the Mid-Penn Conference (0-5) and 1-7 overall, trailed 21-0 after one quarter and 38-0 at the half. The mercy rule (running clock) was in effect the entire second half.

The Lions averted a shutout and got some offense in the second half when Avery McCaulley (50-yard run third quarter) and Kyle Murray (15-yard run fourth quarter) scored touchdowns.

Play of the game: CV’s Kellan Walker returned the second-half kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown.

Players of the game: CV’s Eli Somerville and Dontey Rogan each scored two touchdowns.

Unsung heroes: Eagles’ defense limited Altoona to one first down in the first half and recovered three Lion fumbles.

Unusual statistics: Using a wing-T offense, CV had five runners with over 34 yards rushing each. Eagles also had six different players score touchdowns.

Cumberland Valley coach Mike Whitehead: “We got some short fields early and took advantage. It helps to have multiple running backs.

“(Altoona) runs a tough offense — it’s tough to simulate the veer option — but I thought our defense got off to a good start, did a great job the first half and took control of things all night.”

Altoona coach Vince Nedimyer Jr.: “We turned it over (3 fumbles) again. Give them credit — they schemed us and our kids were a little confused.

“It doesn’t get any easier from here, but we’ve got to take care of what we need to do.

“We executed some things in the second half and we’ve got to take any kind of positives we can get.”

Notable: Kassidy Duclos, representing FBLA, was crowned homecoming queen at halftime. She was escorted by K.J. Futrell. There were 21 candidates. … David Aboud was the Lions’ honorary captain. Aboud retired from the Altoona Area School District after 41 years of service as a social studies teacher, coordinator of the community service program and adviser to the AAHS student council

Records: Altoona 0-5 Mid-Penn, 1-7 overall; Cumberland Valley 2-3 Mid-Penn, 4-4 overall.

Next week: Altoona hosts State College on senior night Friday; Cumberland Valley hosts Central Dauphin East Friday.
