Bearcats knock off Central

ROARING SPRING — Huntingdon held on for a 14-7 win over Central Friday night in a defensive battle as both teams are positioning themselves for the playoffs.

Coming into the game, Central was ranked third and Huntingdon ranked fourth in the latest District 6 3A standings. Huntingdon intercepted Central’s quarterbacks four times, and the last one of the night came when safety Derrick Fultz picked off his second pass of the evening as Central was driving with under 50 seconds remaining at midfield. The win secured a playoff berth for the Bearcats.

Play of the game: Central’s Jeff Hoenstine eluded several tacklers as he was scrambling in the backfield and launched a pass that WR Ethan Eicher caught between two Huntingdon defenders to score Central’s only touchdown on the evening.

Player of the game: Derrick Fultz had 99 yards of total offense and two touchdowns with two interceptions. He also had a 43-yard average on four punts.

Unsung hero(es): QB Nick Troha passed for 129 yards. Andrew Miller had five receptions for 61 and had a couple pass breakups from his corner position.

Most vital statistic: There were a combined 16 penalties on the evening between both teams.

Huntingdon coach Shane Thomas: “Our defense really stepped up this evening and played a great game. I was pleased how we defended both quarterbacks as each of them bring something different to prepare for. We did enough on offense to win, but we had too many penalties and mistakes that we cannot make as we continue along.”

Huntingdon’s Derrick Fultz: “This was a make-or-break game for us, and we came up big this evening. We changed up a couple things on offense for this week, and I am just willing to do whatever it takes to help this team win.”

Notable: On Huntingdon’s first series, it had an 89-yard touchdown pass called back due to a motion penalty.

Records: Central (4-5); Huntingdon (4-5)

Next week: Central vs. Hollidaysburg; Huntingdon vs. Tyrone
