Stingy defense tough in red zone for Bellwood

BELLWOOD — The Bellwood-Antis defense tighted up in three crucial moments during its Inter-County Conference game against Moshannon Valley, and pitched its third shutout of the season, 48-0, on Friday night during homecoming at Memorial Stadium.

Any time Mo Valley advanced the ball around the red zone, Bellwood’s defense delivered.

Zach Mallon ended a Mo Valley drive late in the first quarter with an interception in the end zone. Early in the second quarter, Blue Devils sophomore linebacker Cooper Guyer tipped an option-play pitch in the backfield to himself, and ran it back 65 yards to the Mo Valley 4 to set up a Mallon touchdown run. And Mo Valley had a third-quarter drive end at the B-A 17 on a fumble.

The Blue Devils offense found its rhythm early and often, carrying a 27-0 lead into halftime, powered by two touchdown runs from Nick Plank, and a TD run and a TD catch from Zach Mallon.

Play of the game: Early in the second quarter, Black Knights backup QB Ethan Webb ran an option to the left side, but Guyer disrupted it and created the turnover. That set up a Mallon TD and a 20-0 B-A lead.

Player of the game: Plank only carried the ball nine times but scored three touchdowns (1, 19 and 47 yards) and rushed for 113 yards.

Unsung hero(es): Midway through the fourth quarter, Bellwood’s Connor Gibbons fielded a Mo Valley punt in the middle of the field at his own 32-yard line. He broke to the sideline and raced 68 yards for a touchdown.

Most vital statistic: B-A’s defense held Mo Valley to 95 rushing yards on 36 carries.

Mo Valley coach Mike Keith: “They’re a good football team, they play all three phases very well.”

B-A coach Nick Lovrich: “I think we’ve gotten better every week and that’s what our goal is. We’re not really concerned about who we’re playing, we’re concerned with how we play, and I think we’re playing pretty well right now.”

Guyer: “I read the option play and I knew my responsibility was the pitch man there, so I just broke outside when I saw his hand motion go out for the pitch; I just tipped it and ran forward. It was a great feeling.”

Notable: Mo Valley starting QB Ben Murawski went down with a shoulder injury in the first quarter. He attempted to return, but left for good in the second quarter. Webb finished the game for the Black Knights. … Mallon rushed for 82 yards on 12 carries, and had a 60-yard catch-and-run for a TD. … B-A QB Trevor Miller was 5-of-7 for 131 yards and a touchdown. … B-A girls basketball standout Alli Campbell was named homecoming queen during halftime.

Records: Moshannon Valley (1-4), Bellwood-Antis (5-0).

Next week: Moshannon Valley hosts Williamsburg. Bellwood-Antis visits Northern Bedford.
