Lion-size victory: Ridge pulls away in 4th for impressive road win

JOHNSTOWN — Saturday’s contest between Chestnut Ridge and Westmont Hilltop was a battle of different styles — the quick-strike offense of the Lions versus the ground-and-pound attack of the Hilltoppers.

Westmont controlled the game for all but :46 of the first quarter, scoring on an 18-play drive. However, it could not compete with the offense of the Lions. Four of Chestnut Ridge’s six touchdowns were on plays of over 30 yards, as it blitzed Westmont, 40-23, on Saturday afternoon.

Play of the game: Up 19, the Lions saw their lead cut to 26-23 on the last play of the third quarter. The Lions ran a fake punt on a fourth-and-10. The snap went to the up man, Logan Pfister. He rolled right, eluded some tacklers, and then went down the sideline, beating Westmont defenders to the pylon for a 36-yard touchdown run.

Player of the game: Pfister, Ridge’s QB, played a part in four of his team’s 6 TDs. He completed touchdown passes of 8 yards to Matt Whysong and 61 yards to Trevor Weyandt. He added touchdown runs of 12 yards and the fake punt.

Unsung hero: Chestnut Ridge’s defensive unit. After the game-opening drive, they clogged up the middle to stifle the Hilltoppers’ run game. They faced 64 runs, giving up 246 yards. A third of those yards came on the first drive of the game.

Most vital statistic: Chestnut Ridge ran 30 plays on offense, gaining 358 yards (11.9 yards per play). Westmont Hilltop ran over twice as many plays (70) but gained only 322 yards (4.6 yards per play).

Chestnut Ridge coach Max Shoemaker on adjustments after the first quarter: “We just got a little more accustomed to what they were doing. Our game plan is a credit to coach (Eric) Zeznanski and coach (Jared) Bilchak.Westmont, to their credit, really executed on that first drive. I even said on that sideline, that was an 18-play drive, they can not do that all game long. They are going have breakdowns. That was our attitude. Be patient defensively. They are going to get their yardage, but we don’t want to give up the big plays, we want to make them earn it.”

Chestnut Ridge quarterback Logan Pfister: “I was a little surprised coach called the fake punt. It was fourth-and-10, and we needed a lot of yards, but we had good blocking and a nice cutback lane for me to get into the open field. Originally, I was looking to run, but we also have a pass option. I was looking to pass and it wasn’t there, and good blocking opened up the back side and I was able to run.”

Notable: Whysong carried the ball seven times for 144 yards, including a 39 yard touchdown run. He had a 27-yard run that converted a key third down on a drive. He then capped the drive off with an 8-yard touchdown catch. … Teammate Trevor Weyandt had a 61-yard touchdown catch late in the first half for a 20-7 halftime lead. … Hudson Holbay led Westmont with 99 yards rushing on 24 carries. … The Lions are 4-0 for only the fourth time (2004, 2005, 2018) in the past 16 years.
