Defense sparks State College in second half

CHAMBERSBURG — State College was held to just 139 yards and three points in the first half against Chambersburg on Friday night at Trojan Stadium.

But the Little Lions got on track in the second half and a pair of interceptions by the defense helped set the offense up for the deciding touchdowns in a 27-17 Mid Penn Commonwealth Division victory over the Trojans.

Unbeaten State College led just 13-10 with 10:42 left in the game after Aiden Spitler kicked his second field goal of the game. But interceptions by Isaiah Edwards and Dresyn Green on the next two series by Chambersburg turned the game around.

Play of the game: The Trojans had matched the Little Lions blow-for-blow. But on a quick out pass by Chambersburg quarterback Brady Stumbaugh, Edwards and receiver Malaki Blair both had their hands on the ball and Edwards wrestled it away. Three plays later, Edwards scored on a 28-yard pass from Brady Dorner that completely fooled the Trojan defense.

Player of the game: Edwards caught three passes for 41 yards and a TD, ran 1 yard for a score and had the pick.

Unsung hero: State College’ Nathan Lusk snagged four passes for 109 yards. Two of those catches set up Little Lion scores, three of them provided a first down and two of those came on third down.

Most vital statistics: Chambersburg QB Brady Stumbaugh was intercepted three times by State College, Carson Franks, Edwards and Green. The Little Lions had 13 of their 18 first downs in the second half.

State College’s Matt Lintal: “We felt momentum shifted when Isaiah got that interception. When we scored right after that to go up two scores; then we could control the tempo of the game from that point on. On that pass to Isaiah, we had been running Brady and noticed the cornerback was coming up. We were waiting for a time to make that play call and it worked.”

State College’s Isaiah Edwards: “Just before the interception, I should have caught a touchdown pass, so I felt I had to do something special to make up for it. I saw the pass coming and broke on it. The ball was kind of in the middle of us and we both had it, but I said to myself that I really needed this and slipped it out of his hands.”

Notable: Chambersburg has never beaten State College in 16 tries. … Dorner hit on 12 of 22 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown. … Green was the Little Lions’ top rusher with 83 yards on 15 attempts.

Records: State College is 5-0. Chambersburg is 3-2.

Next week: State College is at Central Dauphin East on Friday, 7. Chambersburg plays at Cumberland Valley on Friday, 7.
