BEA wins key Class 3A game over Central

WINGATE — It was separation week in the race for the District 6 3A playoff spots and Bald Eagle Area gained a degree of separation from the field after topping Central, 29-7 at Alumni Field. BEA is now 4-1 and stands alone at the top of the 3A rankings.

“If we wanted to stay on top we had to have this game,” Eagles coach Jesse Nagle said. “But we weren’t looking ahead. We take it one game at a time. And we knew (Braden) Kitt is a nice athlete and (Jeff) Hoenstine is going to be special.”

The Eagles put the game away in the third quarter when Kaden Bittinger went 11 yards for a score and Caleb Burns, a defensive tackle, scored from the 3 with 2:38 left in the quarter.

Play of the game: BEA’s Kyler Cunningham recovered a Central fumble in the end zone for BEA’s first score of the game.

Player of the game: BEA’s Kaden Bittinger ran for 91 yards and threw for 103 to lead the Eagle offense.

Unsung hero: BEA defensive tackle David Close who anchored the defense and also ran for a two-point conversion following BEA’s first score

Most vital stat: BEA held Central to 73 yards rushing.

Bald Eagle Area coach Jesse Nagle: “Everyone thinks we’re an air team. But our offensive line is the best we’ve had since I’ve been here. In times of need we can run you over.”

Central coach Dave Baker: “They’re good. They’re a very well-balanced team, offensively and defensively. We’re trying to get where they are.”

Notable: The game was the first of the season at home for the Eagles, who had to move their first game because the track around the field wasn’t finished. … Defensive tackle Caleb Burns scored a touchdown for the Eagles and defensive tackle David Close scored on a two-point conversion.

Records: BEA (4-1); Central (2-3)

Next week: BEA at Tyrone Friday, 7 p.m.; Central at P-O, Friday, 7 p.m.
