Titans enjoy a trip on the Rhodes to victory

CLAYSBURG — Claysburg-Kimmel pounced on the opening kickoff at the Tussey Mountain 29-yard line with an opportunity to take an early lead.

But the Bulldogs were sluggish out of the gate once they had the ball, leading to a turnover on downs and two quick Tussey Mountain touchdowns on the Titan’s first two possessions in a 48-6 rout Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.

Play of the game: Tussey Mountain’s Tyler Rhodes scored the game’s opening touchdown with a 30-yard interception of a Corey Chamberlain pass attempt.

Player of the game: Rhodes finished with three touchdowns, including a 46-yard pass from Leonard and a 1-yard score in the fourth quarter.

Unsung hero: Junior Kaden Lucko led the Titans rushing attack with 94 yards on 15 carries and scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to give Tussey Mountain a four-possession lead at halftime.

Most vital statistic: The Titans defense allowed just two Bulldog first downs, while Tussey racked up 15 first downs and out-rushed Claysburg by over 200 yards.

Tussey Mountain coach Antony Sottasante on first-half performance: “I really think our guys understood the gameplan, and came out and played with a lot of effort and executed, and that’s what football is all about.”

Claysburg-Kimmel coach Matt Bilchak: “We knew they were going to be physical coming out, and we just didn’t respond the way that we needed to. But hats off to Tussey, they played physical, and we’re just looking forward to rebounding next week.”

Sottasante on Rhodes: “He is just an incredible young man. He’s a great football player, maybe one of the best I’ve ever coached, and I’ll tell you what–people better start paying attention to this kid, because he’s going places.”

Notable: Leonard completed 8-of-12 passes for 132 yards and one touchdown for the Titans. … Rhodes was the team’s second-leading rushing, grinding out 84 yards on nine carries. … Chamberlain was 4-for-20 passing, but completed a 20-yard pass to Kobe Harr for the Bulldogs lone score of the game.

Records: Tussey Mountain (1-0); Claysburg-Kimmel (0-1)

Next week: Tussey Mountain will travel to Everett, while Claysburg heads to Williamsburg.
