Edwards’ score lifts Little Lions

STATE COLLEGE – It all came down to a fourth and goal, and one guy said he wanted the chance to be the guy to put it in.

Isaiah Edwards delivered.

The direct snap up the middle proved to be the difference as State College pulled out a 20-17 win over St. Augustine (N.J.) at the State High South Field Track Friday night.

Play of the game: Edwards on a fourth-and-goal direct snap scored the game winning touchdown for the Little Lions.

Player of the game: Dresyn Green rushed for 100 yards on 14 carries for the Little Lions

Unsung hero: Edwards scored the game-winning touchdown, racking up 53 yards on seven rushes.

Most vital statistic: State High won the game despite turning the ball over three times. The Hermits, however, were only able to muster seven points off the Little Lion miscues.

State College coach Matt Lintal quote: “Anytime you can play this level of competition this early in the year, it makes you get better. We got a lot to clean up for sure, but credit to (St. Augustine). We had a lot of guys battling cramps throughout the night. (Edwards) had some cramps, and had to dig deep. That was some clutch time.”

St. Augustine (N.J.) coach Peter Lancetta quote: “We had the lead into the fourth quarter, overcame horrendous field position time and time again only to find the flags on the field. That’s real tough to do that.”

Edwards quote: “I told coach, ‘give me the ball coach, I’ll get in the end zone, I promise. It’s all about grit. Shoutout to our defense, they really balled their heart out, got us a turnover deep in the end zone and gave us an opportunity to score. Everybody just kept their poise.”

Notable: This was the first game State College played at the South Track Field because of on-going renovations at Memorial Field. … It was the Hermits’ season opener as New Jersey’s kickoff weekend generally comes at a later date than Pennsylvania. … Both teams racked up seven first downs, and the Hermits were flagged nine times for 88 yards.

Records: St. Augustine, N.J. (0-1); State College (2-0)

Next week: St. Augustine will be off for the next two weeks before heading to Lenape of Medford, N.J. State College hosts Hollidaysburg.
